We when to ‘look’ at the puppies a friend had. We had a Lab who worked with me as an assistance dog in my business. Teba was the best thing I had ever done (passed on from cancer in the fall) and so wanted to continue (waited for a few months, however longing for the companionship). I friend suggested I think of a Golden Retriever, if I got one there would never be a second thought.
I watch the local shelter and contacted the rescues, so when a friend suggested I check these puppies, I thought (mistakenly) I will just look. While driving over I contemplated having a puppy again. Wasn’t sure I was really in a good place for all the work involved with getting a puppy. But I was only looking right?
When we arrived we were met by Betsy. A full grown GR and weighing probably 150, as she was very big. My friend said this is the ‘Mom’ and the ‘Dad’ was outside and would be back soon. When ushered to the house (I had already stipulated, I would like a female), we moved to the doorway of the Dining Room. I almost ran out the door - here were 7 balls of fur working together to move an Oak Dining Room Table. Too say I was dismayed would be an understatement.
After saying my daughter and I would need to discuss this decision, and my friends husband was putting them back in the ‘puppy room’. He looked surprised and ask how one of the puppies got in the dining room, as it was a male. Stating I had not seen ‘all’ the puppies, he brought in a middle sized female who gingerly walked over and sniffed my daughter, then moved on to me. To my astonishment she climbed in my lap and went too sleep. That was at the beginning of the most wonderful part of my life.
That was sweet. My brother lost his wife to a unexpected fall last March. Now, his only companion is Rocky, his golden retriever. Rocky is now 13.5, so he is a senior citizen and sometimes acts the part.
A touching, loving and spirtual insight of the dying process, filled with peace, smiles and starting on their journey, taking me with them as far as I could go, returning back with something I didn't have before. Will be out early in 2010..on Kindle
