The book 'What must not be lost' is a creative innovation by Olusegun Lawal that is more than just a compilation of words, It is a well written book in terms of the systematic unfolding of the plot and it's ability to captivate the attention of the reader with its unique attributes of intrigue and suspense which are key components of an outstanding literature. The theme of the book is centred on the importance of imbibing certain core values of character such as honesty, hard work, love, friendship, care while expunging vices such as envy, greed and an inordinate ambitious spirit. This is adequately displayed by the main character of the book,named Akani, who is an epitome of wisdom,an industrious man, a loving husband and father, a loyal friend and above all, a man with high moral standing who is unwilling to compromise his values for selfish gains. This piece attempts to portray the picture of how we ought to live as humanbeings to realize peaceful coexistence by emphasing the importance of care and empathy among one another. In a succinct manner, it reveals the fact that a man who chooses to be truly moral and upright at all times even in the face of temptation, is often unpopular among his fellow men and could become the target for vicious machinations. It however reveals that a greedy and malevolent spirit only yields transient success and that good ultimately triumphs over bad.
Part 2_The first striking fact about this innovation is that it is written by a young individual who has chosen to rise above the depravity of the world today to show that one can still choose good in the midst of an overwhelming atmosphere of immorality. He has achieved this by way of penning down his position against moral decadence and laxity which is a characteristic among youths of today. This makes his book quite significant as most men today, are willing to sacrifice integrity, diligence and a general sense of propriety at the altar of self aggrandizement. The idea of being a 'good' person has been replaced with the idea of being a 'successful' person such that the worth of a person is evaluated in terms of his financial standing and material acquisitions, rather than his character.
The author is one of the few youths of today who has chosen to be dynamic by discovering and harnessing his talent rather than expecting handouts from potential employees who at the moment are not easily accessible. It is no doubt that the unemployment rate in the country is very high and this ought to resonate the entrepreneurial zeal in the average Nigerian youth. Even as a 300l student, Olusegun has chosen to think outside the box and to add meaning to his existence beyond just passing through the univeristy's system and awarded a certificate. He has shown the trait of self discovery and development which are essential if one must live a fulfilling life.
