Life never came with any instructions on how to love myself after I had spent years being told I was worthless, ugly, fat and that is all I could ever be. The only reason why I ever even believed it was because I hadn't mastered the art of loving myself. Growing up I didn't have a consistent male figure in my life to show me as a woman, the appropriate way for a man to talk, treat and love a woman so my first assumption was whatever and whoever claims to love me will be enough. I didn't stop to think that any man who loves you will never place you in a position where you can no longer see what is so evidently beautiful about yourself.
I'm not talking just about my exterior image either, I mean the self-love for the things about me within my past, heart and soul that I had no control over to change or get rid of. When it is anything to do with your exterior you are always faced with options to adjust it but when you dislike the things about you that are unique within, you face the problem of living a very unhappy life. I knew I had to take it upon myself to spend two years getting to grips with myself, it may sound like a long time but you would be surprised what four years of abuse could do to a woman.
I started off by simply writing down a list of the things I felt that I disliked about myself, then I asked myself if I could ever change them. If the answer was 'NO' I would cross them off of my list and take each day to work at forgetting about them. If I had no power in changing them, why was I giving them power to change me?
The thing is, when you don't love yourself it is also extremely hard for anyone to truly love you. The time you spend trying to disguise the things about you that you don't like is time that you should have spent learning to love them, because only then will the right people align into your life. They will love the real you, not the fabricated version that doesn't live him/herself yet.
After the first year I saw big changes in my attitude but decided that another year would really give me the time to grow. I had to leave the job that made me un-happy, get rid of the friends who didn't make me feel good and start by creating my happy place. A big downfall of not loving you is depression and anything or anyone that isn't good for you only makes this worse.
I highly recommend for anyone who is even slightly unsure of themselves, their purpose, beauty or soul to really take the time to establish you and your happy place. We get one life and we shouldn't live it caged in by beliefs that we aren't good enough.
That is great Ron, I am so profoundly happy that you found the strength and love of self even in testing times! It is very inspiring to hear and may you continue to be blessed in abundance.
You are absolutely right about creating a strong image of oneself. I love the way you went about doing it. Eva is right. You set a wonderful example.
Fortunately, I started off with strong self esteem. I overcame being small for my age and a bit shy in public life being very strong physically and learning how to speak publicly without fear. When my appearance changed dramatically at 20 when my hands and arms were paralyzed. My perception of myself never changed and has helped me overcome the stigma associated with being paralyzed.
