Another humorous tale set as a letter to editor. Hope it make you smile.
To the Editor,
There are several letters in the first four weeks of this high school football season regarding the moose-call after touchdowns. Some are calling for its continuation while others call for it removal for being insensitive or childish. Last week’s letter asked the question when and how the moose-call started.
In fall of 1965, I was the senior quarter back for the Moose of Monroeville. Jim was the senior running back. There was a foreign exchange student named Sanja also starting his senior year. He became Sonny because it was close to his pronunciation of his name. Sonny said it was not correct but accepted as his American name and it was too problematic to keep correcting everyone.
Jim and I were best friends. The Friday before the first game, we told Sonny it was tradition to make the moose-call after each touchdown as a joke. That night we scored quickly and Sonny made the moose-call as we conveyed to him. His American father and friends asked him about it. Sonny explained two players said it was customary. Our next touchdown, the people around Sonny also made the moose-call. We scored seven touchdowns that night on the way to a blowout victory. After the last touchdown, the whole stadium did the moose-call.
I saw Sonny after the game and explained it was a joke. Sonny said he thought it was a joke but did anyways. His counselor from the organization that facilitated the exchange warned him about such things. I asked why he still did the moose-call. Sonny shrugged his shoulders and smiled it seemed like a funny thing to do. I exclaimed he was crazier than I was. We became friends after explaining what crazier meant. Sonny, Jim and I were always together the last year of high school.
After high school, Jim went to Vietnam and lost his life the first day in a truck accident. Once or twice a year, I would write to Sonny and tell him about my life. Within a couple weeks, there was always a reply keeping me informed of his life. I have pictures of Sonny’s wife, children and grandchildren. In a way, I know them all, yet we have never met. Every letter suggested we meet again either here or at Sonny’s house.
Almost a year ago, I received the only letter from Sonny before I wrote. However, it was not from Sonny. His wife, Maria, wrote me and told me the news Sonny past away from a heart attack the previous week. She asked me to keep sending her letters as this is a link to Sonny’s past. I am planning to meet Maria at Christmas and fulfill the suggestion in all our letters.
I still go to every home game. In memory of Jim and Sonny, I will always moose-call after every touchdown despite what anyone else does in stadium. This one is for Jim and Sonny, MOOOAH.
