The adult sister could only stop for a moment. At home the teenage daughter was watching the younger kids. Parked at the sidewalk in front of the apartment building, the new white car glimmered in the sunlight. The mother was old and sat smiling in the passenger's seat. The adult son came down the steps and showed the mother his new company photo ID that he wore clipped to his lapel at the new job. His days of job skipping were finally over.
"Let me hug my son before we go," the old woman said while trying to step out from the open car door to the sidewalk. "No," she said to help. "Let me do it myself."
Sitting sideways in the car with her feet on the sidewalk and using her arms to push upward she strained, but could not lift herself up. The angle was too great. Then, putting her feet in the street instead of on the sidewalk she rose up, stepped out of the street and up onto the sidewalk to stand at five feet, two inches tall back-straight facing him.
As always, she had found a way to do what she had to do.
