Updating My Stylish Apparel Wardrobe ... intertwined with Mall Walking and Roller Skating!
The other day when this 64 y/o dude was doing his wash, I got bummed out when I took some pants out of the dryer.
As I pulled out my long jeans and a pair of white cargo shorts, I saw that there were tears all over in the fabrics.
Just as I was about to toss the clothes into the garbage can, this baby boomer instantly recalled from when he had recently taken a walk after work at the mall and had seen so many folks wearing clothes with tears all over them!
Back in my hey-day, in the 60's and 70's, we called it a generation gap, when the newbies would note some disconnects in the prevailing societal trends; so maybe my mall walk had showed me that I needed a little bit of a cultural update!
So I decided to just keep my jeans and cargo shorts … even though, at first, I felt a little overly concerned how this would look – didn't want undergarments to be seen! (LOL!)
This torn garment issue brought back to me a fun 'Yat memory now - but not then - from the late 60's when I had been roller skating at a birthday party for a friend at “Phil’s Big Eight Wheels,” where we used to go to on Jefferson Highway . Causeway Blvd.
Being a lousy skater, it took me a long while and many-a-falls to finally get the confidence up to make a full circle around the skating ring without a fall … and I even eventually was able to make a turn by lifting one of my skates!
Well, after feeling my oats and getting too much confidence in a turn with an overalapping foot skate move, I had a big plump to the floor and heard a ripping sound that I didn't know what it was at that time.
I got up quickly and a buddy pointed out to me that I had a full blown tear in my pants all the way from the front to the backside!
How embarrassed I was at that moment, so I pulled off to the side and thankfully someone at the skate check-out had some long safety pins that helped me save the day so I could venture off for some more fun skating rounds!
Back to the present ... I don't think I'll be using safety pins on my jeans or cargo shorts, as I'm saving money and walking in fashion now in my torn apparell …

An enjoyable story, both then and now. I would advise you to take a good look in the mirror before you go out in public with your new, old duds. But it can payoff to be up-to-date.
As I recall, rollerskating was a bit more difficult than ice-skating, although I'm sure there are those that would argue that point. With the former it was the fear of floor burn. And with the latter it was a good lick on the ice, like I did with my elbow one time, tearing my left bicep and taking five weeks to heal on its own. Thank goodness.
Since you are only 64, I would suggest that you put on your new duds and go rollerskating again because I don't think they have an ice rink in Baton Rouge, unless they have one at the mall like they do here in Houston.
