Love, sweet love... seems I'm always waiting in vain, but still, I'll wait

                                                                      Thoughts of you

I waited in the car, nervous fingers tapping on the wheel-

While you pinned your hair and filed your nails.

Time lapsed: Once again I was here waiting, “my sister called,” so you stated!

“Yep, you guessed it, I’m ready and you’re not!”

“Hurry-up!” I shouted, under my breath, abated. “We’re running late again!”

Time is passing as the wheel keeps turning.

Oh, eventually you always came, till… one day, a new driver escorted both of us,

At our appointed time, to a lovely setting; where tall-coned -firs touched the clouds and lined the outskirts of a lush, manicured lawn, with neatly spaced brass- placards.

Where urns of spilled ashes nix over dated names and their quotations.

The caretaker interred you that morning, while leaving me sitting at the wheel.

So once more I’m found waiting. I buried my head in my arms, recalling all the good times…

But suddenly it occurred to me, that now I wait in vain… funny, but a peaceful calm flooded my body and soul,

Ere a bitter storm inside me stirred up a dire hatred for this fleeting life…

“Death you bastard” I blurted out, slamming my fists against the wheel… livid, I cursed God almighty, Tho quietly under my breath, abated; “You, you, you took my wife!!”

Immediately, I slumped into a deep depression, feeling totally deflated, lonely and void of any love…

I rested my head on the wheel and surmised on these thoughts of you.

A sad tale, well written. Flash fiction, based on real life experience.

My condolences to you. A heartrending story. None of us are really in the driver's seat, despite sitting behind the wheel.

Heartrending memories. You’ve chosen a unique way of writing this that effectively grips (this reader) with the anger, the helplessness, and the rage of emotions that losing a loved one can stir. I refer here to something C.S. Lewis wrote in ‘A Grief Observed’ that has always resonated with me. “No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear. I am not afraid, but the sensation is like being afraid. The same fluttering in the stomach, the same restlessness, the yawning. I keep on swallowing. At other times it feels like being mildly drunk, or concussed. There is a sort of invisible blanket between the world and me. I find it hard to take in what anyone says. Or perhaps, hard to want to take it in. It is so uninteresting. I dread the moments when the house is empty. If only they would talk to one another and not to me.” My deepest and most profound sympathies, Bob. You will be in my prayers from this day forward. Peace…. rlc
