A teenaged girl writes down why Thanksgiving means so much to her.
Thanksgiving is that special time of year when the sweet, mouthwatering, pungent odor of turkey basting in the oven permeates our noses, and Thanksgiving also means families getting together to give thanks for all the bountiful blessings that God has bestowed upon their lives. Thanksgiving also means eating mounds of food (and then paying dearly for it later; we are then so stuffed, we can hardly MOVE! LOL), having time off from school until the following Monday or Tuesday (and driving your parents crazy!), and watching the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on tv.
Thanksgiving also means watching football games, rooting for your favorite teams, and looking forward to the day after, which is when the annual Christmas holiday shopping season officially kicks off, and it is also the time when we go to the mall and start our Christmas shopping and see Santa Claus.
I am thankful for many things in my life. I am thankful for a family who loves me (and all my brothers and sisters) unconditionally, good friends, a deepening faith in God and my country, living in a land where freedom reigns, and not having to fear for my very life each and every day.
I also am thankful for having talents that can touch people in a profound way, the ability to create, the ability to play sports well (and enjoy myself in the process), and not having to live in an orphanage any longer. (I did live in an orphanage for nearly three years after my parents died in a hurricane. I was six, and I was in an orphanage in New Orleans. It was the longest three years of my LIFE, and for a while, I thought I would NEVER get adopted by a family, but then the Sanduskys in Tennessee took me in as one of their own, and they are the best family a girl can ever have--or ever hope for!)
Thanksgiving happens to be one of my very favorite holidays next to Christmas. I love Thanksgiving because I get to PIG OUT, and nobody will get mad at me if I sneak an extra drumstick or feed it to one of the dogs! (Hey..they gotta' eat, too, and they should share in the Thanksgiving festivities, too! LOL) I also love Thanksgiving because it is cold outside, and I love Thanksgiving because I usually don't have homework during Thanksgiving break, and I can do whatever I want virtually all weekend. It is a time to be lazy, and it is a time to be thankful and give our thanks to God for the blessings he has given to me.
Another reason I love Thanksgiving is because I get to spend it with my family, and we always have the best time. We play games after the parade has ended (and before we eat; we usually eat about two), and then we sit down to a lucious, eye-popping cornucopia of delights: Cajun deep fried turkey with cornbread stuffing and Cajun seasonings, yams, pecan pie, beets, cranberries, lettuce with celery, onions, bell peppers, carrots, cukes, tomatoes, and dressing (that is optional), homemade mashed potatoes with brown gravy, crawfish etoufee', pumpkin pie, strawberry or French vanilla ice cream, black-eyed peas, green beans with onions and mushrooms, fruit salad, cherry or lime jello, and apple cider, Coke (or various other kinds of soda pop), apple cider, or water to drink, and God knows what else! LOL THEN, after we clean up and the food is put away and the dishes are cleared and washed and put away, we then sit around, with our bellies hanging over our pants, and acting all stuffed and miserable (or sometimes we are so full, we usually end up sleeping part of the afternoon!). But still, we feel good, and we feel satisfied, and this is how we usually end our day. We then may talk as a family, pray, and then read our Bibles, and then usually call it a day. We then set our alarm clocks for the day after (we leave to go Christmas shopping before seven; usually, we end up eating at the Golden Corral, and then we hit the malls!), and go to bed, thankful to have survived another fun Thanksgiving Day.
Thank God I am NOT a TURKEY! I wouldn't have a PRAYER! LOL
Now you know what Thanksgiving means to me, and why I enjoy Thanksgiving Day so much. On that note, may each and every one of you have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving Day!

What a nice story.
Thanksgiving is not as popular over here as it is in the US. By reading these lines I think we should change this and celebrate it as well.

Enjoyable write, Mz Karen. Never was part of a big family, but to go to my cousins up in Philadelphia was kinda like this story. They seemed to do all that Barbara speaks of here...nice family oriented write...enjoy your holidays...Peace, Ed & Rufuz
