A little boy adopted from Africa writes his story.
Jambo! Habari ga---oops! I meant, Hello! How are you?

This is Kwame' Joseph Sandusky. I am four years old. I was adopted from Africa when I was small. I was born there. I was born in a country called Kenya. Kenya is very big and hot, and there are many people and animals there. My favorite animal is the cheetah. Cheetahs can go speedy fast, and I wish I could run like a cheetah!

I came to America because my African mommy and daddy didn't want me. I was born with a sick heart, and I had to go to heart doctor at hospital to get it fixed. I am now doing much better, but I still may need more work on my heart when I get older. Sometimes I get tired if I overdo, and sometimes I need to get stuff called oxygen put into my nose so I can breathe better. If I get tired, I can't breathe good, so this is why I need oxygen, to help me.

I don't remember much about my heart getting fixed, but my Mama says she cried and prayed for me. She says I nearly died the last time, and I was a very sick little boy. She said I almost went to Jesus, but Jesus didn't want me yet, so He sent me back to get better. I then got better, and I got to come home from hospital; and I have been home since; and I really haven't had a lot of trouble with my sick heart.

I love my mommy. She is a really good cook, she makes all the vegetables I like, and she makes real good African food. She can make steak and riio and ugali like an African, and she also can speak Swahili. I have heard her, and I once asked her if she had ever gone to Africa, but she told me no. I asked her where she learn Swahili, she told me her friend, Miss M'buti, taught her. Miss M'buti is from the country I was born in (Kenya), and she is Masai. (I am Masai too. I want to be Masai warrior when I grow up and kill hyenas and lions so they don't hurt the animals or people.)

I love my daddy too. My daddy is very big, very tall, and he looks like a Masai, but he isn't Masai. He is American. I didn't know Americans could be so tall, but my daddy is, and he is very brave. He is very smart, and he loves to play with me.

My mama and daddy work; daddy works at Wal*Mart, which is a big store place, and mama works at hospital as a nurse. So she knows how to take care of me when I get sick or if my heart gives me trouble.

I have brothers and sisters, I have many of them. I think I may have over ten, I don't know, but it IS a lot. I don't know why mama or daddy have so many kids, but they do, and they love us all the same. We are all brothers and sisters, and we are a cool lookin' family. We have kids who are brown, tan, yellow, red, and pink. There are kids who use wheeled chairs or sticks because they can't walk well, and there are kids who can't see, and kids who can't hear and talk with their hands. And then there's me with my bad heart. But we are all brothers and sisters, and we love each other very much.

On Sundays, which is my best day of the week, we go to church, where we learn of Jesus and God and all those people, and we sing and listen to Pastor Bilkey preach. Pastor Bilkey is good, but he shouts too much, and he gets too red in his face when he talks, and I am afraid his heart is going to get sick on him and he will fall over and die. But so far he hasn't, thank goodness! But I love the church music the best, the church singer people sing really pretty, and they sound like angels. They look like angels, too, in their long nightgowns! Whenever I hear the church music, my heart wants to jump out of my chest, and I feel like DANCING! I LOVE church!

Before we go to church, we go to steak place, where we have breakfast, and then we go to church. After church, we have "dinner on the grounds", and we visit and play, and then we go back for another church thingie. We spend all day at church unless we go to steak place if we don't eat at church. Sundays are really fun, and I love to dress up and look good!

But the other days, I go to pre-K, which is where I get to see my friends and learn about our ABC's and numbers, and stuff, and I love playing with my friends Rocco, Tyrone, Teal, Gabor, Evie, Trevor, Kelton, Ashley (but I don't like her so much anymore cos she bit me on the cheek, and I still have a mark on my cheek from her biting me!), Wessley, Reymondo, Benjamin (my brother; yay!!!), Yacinthe, Tony, and Kylie Jo. I also love our teacher, Miss Kate. She is really nice, and she is really tall and smells like roses. She smells so good! (I go to pre-K all day until mama comes in her van and picks up Benjamin and me to go home. Then we go home and play with the other kids in our family if they don't have school stuff to do.)

Well, that is my story. I hope you liked reading about me. I am a very good little boy, and I think you will find that I am very nice and smart! I hope we can become friends, and I hope that I didn't bore you with my story!

I am going to eat now. I am having hot dogs and baked beans for dinner. I will write again soon. 'Bye! (Or, as I like to say in Swahili, Kwaheri!)

~Kwame' J. Sandusky (aged 4).

(Mama helped me with my story. Thought you would like to know that. I can't write or read too good yet.)
