He was cute once I realized he wasn't a snake.
I went out into the kitchen to get a pack of cigarettes and noticed all three cats were shifting around where they were standing. Autumn, the mouthy calico was behind their water dish and she was looking towards the kitten, Tiger. Autumn doesn’t like Tiger much and the only reason I can figure is that the kitten likes to do sneak attacks. Tiger will sit around a corner or hide under the couch and wait for Autumn to come by and attack her. This causes Autumn to hiss and growl at Tiger any chance she gets. I looked at the cats and Dot was in the kitchen facing the living room and I was about to yell at Autumn to knock it off when I saw what looked like a snake gyrating very rapidly on the kitchen floor.

My mouth worked as I tried to call for Robin. Dot was hunkered down trying to grab it. She would get her mouth around it, then it would hit the floor and Dot would shake her head and try again. I grabbed the lid off the cat food bucket and put it over the thing. As I was bending down it stopped moving enough that I could see it was just a salamander. I called for Robin and she came into the kitchen and I told her there was a salamander and pointed at the cat food lid.

Robin kind of laughed at me and said, “I didn’t know you were scared of salamanders.”

“I’m not, they’re icky. I thought it was a snake.” I replied.

“If it had been a snake I wouldn’t have come out here.” Robin said as she tried to find something to catch the salamander in.

Robin grabbed the dustpan to try and scoop it up but it wouldn’t cooperate. It scurried towards the cabinet. It went behind the cabinet so we cleaned it off. As we were cleaning the cabinet off I told Robin that I hoped it didn’t get into the cabinet. We pulled the cabinet out and I grabbed a shoebox that we still have because Autumn is a box cat. Robin had the bottom and I had the top.

Robin got him in the bottom but I couldn’t get the top on and he scurried towards the dining room, which has carpet.

“Quick get it before it gets on the carpet.” Robin said as I grabbed the bottom of the box.

I managed to scoop him into the box and get the top on before he got out again. I handed the box to Robin and told her to take it outside. I followed her to the door and watched her dump him out into the flowerbed. He scurried away and when I checked about twenty minutes later I couldn’t find him.

I’m not sure what possessed him to come in the house and I’m not sure how long he was in the house but hopefully he’ll live a long and happy lizard life outside.

Hope so, too! He was just curious about your goings on inside. Once he saw your kitty cats, he's not likely to ever return!

I'm sure it wouldn't have been a long happy life inside....
