A young boy with Down's syndrome writes about himself.
My name is Roberto. I am 12 years old, and I am a very good boy. I help my mommy and daddy around the house, and I don't give them no lip. I am also very good for my brothers and sisters, and I love them, my family, very much.
I am also a handsome boy. I have black hair and eyes, and I have tanned skin. I was born in Mexico, and I speak both English and Spanish. I was adopted by my mommy and daddy when I was six, and I love my family because they wanted me, and I think that was very nice of them to take me in as their little boy!
I am retarded. That means I don't learn things fast. I was born this way, and I go to a special school to help me learn easy. I also was born with spastic legs, and because of this, my legs don't work the way I want, and I have trouble walking. I use crutches and wear braces on my legs, and they help me walk better. I also have problems with my heart: my heart sometimes beats too fast, and I have funny breathing, and I have to stop and rest, so I can get my breathing back. When this happens, I always get scared, and sometimes I have to get an ambulance ride to the hospital. At the hospital, the doctors and nurses there check me out to make sure that I am going to be okay, and that I am not going to heart attack on them; and I also get some oxygen. Then I am usually okay. But if not, then I have to stay in the hospital for a few days, which always makes me mad!
I was born with something called Down's syndrome. That means I have an extra chromosome, and that made me the way I am. I have slanty eyes, and I am retarded, and I learn slow. I also have funny shaped ears and my tongue seems too big for my mouth, so for this reason I have problems talking well. People sometimes ask me to repeat what I am saying because they don't understand me. It is annoying because I think I am talking good, and then I mess up, and I have to repeat myself!
Because of my learning problems, I go to a special school for kids with special needs. Special needs means kids who are disabled in one way or another. Some of us are disabled in our minds (like me), and some are disabled in their bodies, and because of this they can't walk or get around good. Or they may not be able to see, hear, or talk. Or they may have problems learning. At my school, I have many friends, and I love it! I always have the best time, especially at recess, which is my favorite time of the day at school! I LOVE to play!
When I am not at special needs school, I like to play with my brothers and my sisters, and I like to play with mommy's dog, "Cajun Gold", who looks like a little furry rug with legs; and he always makes me laugh! There are other dogs and cats in our family, too, but my favorite doggie is "Cajun Gold". We also have birds and horses, and we also have hamsters and a snake. We have lots of pets in our family besides kids!
I also like to play accordion. I am learning how to play it, and I am getting good. I can play "Alons A Lafyette" on it, and I can also play "Jamblaya" and "Jole Blonde" on it. I love to sing, too, but my brother Johnny hates the way I sing, he says I sing terrible! I HATE it when he does that; it is like he is Simon Cowell, that mean American Idol guy, and that always hurts my feelings!
I also love to go to church. We go to church every Sunday, my family and me. We go to a nice big church, and we always have fun learning about Jesus Christ and his daddy, God. We also sing songs about Jesus and God, and we sometimes eat after church is over. We are at church most of the day on Sunday, and it is cool! I also love Sundays because we get to go to the Golden Corral for breakfast before church, and I always stuff myself on the breakfast. Golden Corral has very good breakfast there, and that is my favorite place to eat! I always look forward to Sundays because of church and going to the Golden Corral! (Sometimes we go there after church too. But we always go for breakfast time!
Well, that is about it. I can't think what to write about now, so I will go. Maybe I will write again some day, but not now. Have a good day, and God bless you! Bye!
