The Sandusky family continues to grieve over the death of a beloved young family member, who was only six and a half. This entry is written by daughter, Barbara, aged 15, who was the cousin of the one that has died.
I am still numb with shock; I suppose this is normal after hearing that one of my cousins has died....
This is Barbara Sandusky. I am still trying to cope with the awful news that we got on Saturday: our little cousin, Cajun Marie Sandusky, died on Saturday, and she was just six and a half years old. She died from a respiratory arrest after she had a respiratory crisis; she was prone to those, and this time she wasn't so lucky. No matter how hard they tried to revive her, the medical team just could not bring Cajun back.
Cajun Marie Sandusky lived in Memphis, Tennessee, with her uncle, my daddy's brother, Marvin, and his wife, Toni, and their daughters. Cajun was the second youngest of the six Sandusky daughters, and she was the first one to be adopted. She came to the Sandusky family from Korea when she was a baby, and she had a lot of serious physical problems, and was also mentally disabled. She couldn't do a lot for herself, and she had to be fed by way of a G-tube in her belly, and she couldn't walk, talk, hear, or even see. She was more like a baby than a little girl, but she still knew in her own special way that she was loved, and we loved her very much whenever they would come up here to Nashville or we would go to Memphis to see them. She was a very cute little kid, tiny for her age, and very petite, looking more like three than six. She had long, silken black hair that she often wore in two braids, uptilted eyes that were strangely clear, even though she couldn't see out of them, a thin little face, a cute little button nose, and a huge smile that would light up the room. She always seemed to have a smile on her face, and she loved it whenever people would care for her or hold her in their arms or interacted with her.
Maman and daddy are in Memphis now, and they will be gone for a week or so, just to be there for daddy's brother, and to offer their support and prayers. I am now holding down the fort, and I am now acting as mother and caretaker to my brothers and sisters. It isn't easy, but I have to be strong for them. They know that their cousin has died, and sadness can easily be seen on their faces as they try to cope with and understand what has taken place. I find it hard to cope with because it is so close to Christmas, and instead of being cheery and excited at the prospect of the Christmas holiday coming up, we are enveloped in a sea of sadness and pain as we try to cope with the sudden death of a beloved little cousin who died far too young. I guess it was inivitable, seeing that Cajun Marie had so many serious health problems, but it still doesn't make sense. She was just a little child who didn't even begin to live or enjoy life, and now she is in Heaven, where she is now with Jesus. We aren't supposed to be sad on Christmas; but to tell you the truth, we just don't feel very Christmas-y right now. We are too sad, and right now, all we can think about is daddy or our cousin, Cajun Marie, and how she is now with Jesus, in Heaven.
