Johnny and his teenaged sister, Barbara, are now in Alaska; and he decided to start a "travel diary".
Day 2, Alaska~
Hi! This is Johnny, and you can probably guess that I am not at home back in Nashville, Tennessee, now. I am in ALASKA; I am here with my older sister, Barbara (she is 16), and we are staying with a friend of our mother's, Sikik Eegeesiak, for a week. We have been here two days, and this is the first day where we really felt like doing anything; yesterday, all we did was sleep all day; we were tired from all the traveling, and I am still not used to the change in time here! I will probably be tired until at least Wednesday or so! LOL
We got invited to go to Alaska like last month, but orignally, I was the only one who was gonna' go; but then maman had Barbie go with me. See, I have medical problems, and Barbara does a good job at taking care of me. I have seizures, and I also have Duchenne's, and I happen to be in a wheelchair (or on crutches some of the time), and I can quickly run into a problem if I am not careful. I also have problems hearing and seeing, and I also have breathing problems; so I need help with a lot of things. Barbie acts as my arms because there is a lot I can't do for myself, like put on my pants, socks, or shoes, brush my hair or my teeth, or stuff like that. I also have my helping dog, "Ginger", here with me, and she helps me out a lot too.
While it has been kinda' mild in Tennessee, here in Barrow, Alaska, it is cooooooooooooooooollllllllld!! The temps are in the 20's to middle 30's, and I am bundled up like a polar bear. It may be spring according to the calendar, but according to the scene outside, it looks more like DECEMBER than APRIL! There's snow on the ground, and there's not much to see here; just a bunch of old-looking houses with beat-up old vehicles and stuff, and hungry-looking husky dogs lying about in the snow. Barrow doesn't have any trees, and it looks like a rather boring place; but as long as I am here, I might as well make the best of it.
Sikik is nice, though: she does speak English (much to my surprise!), and I have already met some of her brothers and sisters. (She has four sisters and eight brothers. Hmmm..Almost sounds like MY family! LOL) She is very sweet, and she wants to make sure that we have all that we need and that we are happy to be here (and we ARE!). She says she is making us something for supper; as long as it isn't whale or seal, I guess I shouldn't mind, but I am kinda' worried as to what she is making for us to eat! She says we may go to the store later; that way she can show us Barrow, and later, after supper, if we aren't tired, we can then look for the Northern Lights.
I just hope that when we are outside looking for the Northern Lights, we don't meet up with a polar bear...
ANYWAY, we had a good trip to Canada from Nashville (we refueled in Chicago), and then we took another plane from the British Columbia airport, and we got into Anchorage a few hours later. We then spent the night at a hotel near the Anchorage airport, and we then took another plane, this time a little puddle-jumper type deal, to Barrow, where we are now. As a result of all the traveling around, both Barbara and I are bone=tired, and I will be surprised if I will be able to stay awake long enough to see the Northern Lights tonight!
So that is my first day here, and part of the second day here. I will write again in a day or two, so stay tuned! I will let you know what Sikik made for supper; if I don't answer, then you know I died....LOL
