Dr. Wright updates us on what has been going on in his world. He has been very busy, plus he has been recovering from a serious kidney infection that put him into the hospital for two weeks.
I am sorry if I haven't written in here in quite a long while, but much has been happening in my life.
Besides working gobs of hours a week, I have been busy trying to recover from another dadburned kidney infection that put me on "the other side of the charts"; I was in the hospital for two weeks, and it liked to have near killed me. I am still not 100% just yet; but I AM definitely feeling a lot better than I had been as of late!
My dear, sweet Sarah has been running the show while I have been slaving away at my dungeon--ah, er, JOB--at the hospital, and if it were not for her or the girls, Brooklyn and SueEllen, I would have probably needed up in the psych ward long ago!
Other than working and trying to get over my kidney infection, life has been very well for my family and myself.
My cousin is pregnant with her first child, and it is definitely a boy; so it looks like there will be a little male relative in my future. We are excited at the anticipated family addition, and he is due around Christmastime.
Also, my other cousin and his wife are in the throes of getting a divorce. That really saddens me because my cousin has been through a lot in his life, and his wife was caught seeing another man; and now they have separated. I just thank God that my cousin and his (soon-to-be ex) wife had no children between them; it seems that it is always the children who suffer the most during a divorce.
Also, my mother, Rheta, has been sick: she has uterine cancer, and she has been in and out of the hospital, receiving chemo and radiation treatments; and it has been a worrisome, stressful time for our family; but so far, mom is still in good spirits, and she isn't too desperately sick, thank goodness (but she did lose all her hair, and her appetite isn't the greatest in the world; so we Wright kids are trying to get her to eat).
I am worried about our hospital's charge nurse, though: she has been working many hours overtime because a fellow nurse's husband has been desperately ill, so Louisiana Sandusky has been working her shift--as well as Genevieve Voisin's shift--, and I konw she is past the point of exhaustion. She really looks terrible, and she looks like she could use a month's vacation, just so she can rest! Louisiana has about a million kids (NOT really, but she DOES have a lot!!), and she is also part of a very busy adoption community. I really don't want to barge into her personal life, but I am very worried about Louisiana because she really looks horrible!
Louisiana's daughter, Ronee' Le-Anne Reaux, who is now 12 1/2, recently had hip replacement surgery a little over two months ago, and I am happy to say that she flew through the surgery with flying colors. Now her recovery has been a little rough in spots, but for the most part, her recovery from the surgery has been right on target, and she is just now back to using her crutches again, and she is getting around so much easier. Best of all, her hips no longer bother her, and she has been having very little in the way of pain in her hips, which is great news!
Her son, Johnny, who is also 12 1/2, also was in the hospital for a biopsy and tests, and I am thankful to report that Johnny's muscular dystrophy has NOT worsened (much to our shock and disbelief!). Johnny also hasn't had a seizure in over a year, and they have finally seemed to have found a combination of medications to help control his seizures. (Johnny has epilepsy and respiratory problems, in addition to his muscular dystrophy.)
I also heard from another patient of mine, one that I hadn't heard from in ages it seems, and just last week she visited me. I was so surprised to have seen M'Buti Ayala Moore-Sormiento standing right in front of me, on her crutches, her face aglow with renewed health--and six small kids in tow behind her and her husband, Roberto Sormiento, who is another fellow RN at our hospital. She has her son, Jubaki, who is now eight years old--and who is growing like a weed. Her is surprisingly tall for his age, and I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being over six foot tall, just like his parents! In addition to Jubaki, they have one daughter, Eshe', who is now three years old, and three more sons, Kibarake (who is Eshe' 's twin brother), and the triplets, Kenji, Kiloki, and Kibaki, who are now six months old and look like three peas from the same pod! They look exactly alike!
Anyway, M'Buti was one of my patients, and when I first saw her in the operating theater, I honestly felt that she wasn't going to make it. She had a whole host of ongoing medical problems, among them being necrotizing fasciitis ("flesh-eating disease"), severe third- and fourth-degree burns on the back of her legs, her buttocks, and her back, and severe weight loss (cachexia, caused by intractable pain she had as a result of both the burns and the nec-fac), and I honestly remember thinking that she didn't have a chance. But God had other ideas, and slowly, but surely, M'Buti Moore recovered, and now she is a very busy mother to six very active small children, all under the age of nine, and she is now working part time for a local newspaper, The Nashville Banner. So life for her has been nothing short of a miracle, and I am very happy that I had a key role in that miracle!
I may be having some surgery myself in the near future: my spine is starting to curve, and it is causing me great pain and discomfort. If I don't have anything done to correct this deformity, I may end up having serious problems with my breathing and with my other internal organs. As you can imagine, I am rather concerned because I have already been through a lot with my spina bifida; but I am hopeful that the Good Lord will get me through this upcoming trial.
So that is what has been new with me. I am sorry for not writing in here sooner, but now you know why you haven't heard from me lately. Hopefully I can drop by again much sooner; but one never knows what is up the pike for this very busy doctor!

My, all these seriously ill people! You've portrayed them realistically. It makes me wonder if you have a degree in the medical field. Are you a nurse or doctor? If not, your research is fantastic!
