The effort continues to find my voice
As a concerned citizen of Alabama, I think we need to consider changing our image. Maybe that would change a few minds about us, if we simply changed our image, POW !!! We could see a new day! I mean Georgia did.... Georgia used to be the land of red clay, now... think about it, Georgia is Hotlanta!!! The A.T.L.!!! It's got that dance thing "the dirty bird" it's the "gateway to the south". Georgia has a major airport. Georgia has hosted the Olympics. Georgia pesonified would get lots of respect at the STATE family reunion. As an up and comer, why can't Alabama do the same?

I think it's the state slogan, that's the real problem, it's like a mind set we need to change. Right now the state slogan for Alabama is ... and I quote,” Wonder Full". I'll let that sink in.
Okay, I'm not impressed either. Whoever thought of that? Could they have been thinking about the vacation they took to Georgia? While it is an improvement over what it used to be, have you seen it? The one I've seen on Alabama license plates recently, “The Heart of Dixie", and let me say, right here thatI'm not bashing the thought of "Dixie", ... it is a free country, and if I don't like something as a citizen I would use the system provided, to address those opinions or concerns. This is bigger than a party line, this is my home state. This where I was born, this is where I came to be. This is almost as big as the Alabama, Auburn game, this is Bear Bryant big, and... can we please have a moment of silence for Coach Bear Bryant?...OK now, thank you given the gravity of the situation we need something that makes a statement to the world, about whom we were and who we are now and who we will be. Hmmmmm... Who we were, let's look at that.

We used to have a song that said, "Oh Susanna, don't you cry for me, for I come from Alabama, with a banjo on my knee." I have always wondered why. Of course, we all have to come from some place. But, why did the people from Alabama have to show up with banjos on their knees? Where were they going, with banjos on their knees? How could they possibly get there with banjos on their knees? Was this ever considered a cool phrase, or a good idea? Maybe at one time instead of wearing a pair of shades and turning your collar up, the fashion police from Alabama thought hey!!!! I know.. I'll put a banjo on my knee! Did this really impress the women in Alabama? Were they alone in their infatuation? Were other women in other states impressed as well, and just dared not talk about it? I don't know, the history books don't tell us, but apparently other states didn’t place instruments on their knees... like piano's or tubas... just us in Alabama... with banjos! Why is that?

And what happened when two guys with banjos on their knees happened to make the same woman swoon? No doubt it happened all the time! Did these two guys ... have a banjo duel for the woman's affections ... like in Deliverance? I think so ...I bet they played until maybe a string broke, or maybe one played a rift the other couldn't repeat or top, or a finger cramped or broke... who can say? Maybe the woman just lost interest when another banjo wearing guy walked by and caught her eye... Some things happen for reasons we can never understand.
