The story that I set out to cover in the spring of 2000 had nothing to do with the amazing Moran family of Harris Neck,

Georgia—or at least I wasn’t aware that it did. I drove back and forth between Savannah and St. Helena Island, South Carolina, with the intent of writing for a popular publication a quaint travel piece about exchange visits between African Americans of the Southeast and Africans of West Africa. Upon encountering a group of refugees from Sierra Leone, my quaint story rapidly evolved into something completely unexpected, a tale of political injustice and spiritual triumph unlike any I would ever have attempted to write as fiction.

So intense was the drama of social intrigue, racial despair, and mystical wonder that various publications decided it was a bit too potent. It is therefore with much pleasure and gratitude that after some five years of living with and constantly updating THE KEEPERS OF THEIR PEOPLE’S SPIRIT, I am honored to announce it is now available in the pages of The American Poet Who Went Home Again.
