Maggie loved Jim very much. but as time went by she saw a different side of Jim. a side that scared her. that finally brought her into the final hour.
Maggie was so much in love with Jim. They had known each other sense the sixth grade. Maggie lived with her mother and step father. At night before Maggie went to sleep she always prayed that her step father would stop drinking. Her mother would always try to hide the bruises from her face. But Maggie knew what was going on in the house. Her step father was a monster, A drunk, a wife beater. Maggie knew that Jim was a different kind of man. He was loving and caring. And he loved Maggie as much as she loved him. They had set the wedding date for September. Maggie had 6 months to get everything ready. She knew her mother couldn’t afford a wedding, so Maggie worked two jobs and banked most of her money.
Jim had a good job also.. He was a computer engineer.
He was saving money to buy Maggie the house of her dreams.
Little did Maggie know all this happiness would come to a halt.
The day of the wedding Maggie looked beautiful. She wore a beautiful white laced gown. Her mother made her bouquet.
It had white and peach flowers. Jim looked as handsome as ever.
He wore a white tux with a peach flower in his lapel. Maggie had invited 200 people to her wedding. And they all showed up to see Maggie and Jim become husband and wife. At the reception Jim asked Maggie to go in the hallway with him. He had a surprise for her. Jim had something behind his back.
Maggie wrestled with Jim to retrieve what was behind his back.
She finally grabbed what felt like paper. As she looked at it she screamed with such delight. Jim had bought two tickets to Hawaii for their honeymoon. Maggie couldn’t sit still she had to show all her friends and family what Jim had done for her.
Maggie was so much in love. She never knew just how much Jim loved her until now. The next day they boarded the plane to Hawaii. Maggie fell asleep in Jim’s arms. She was so tired from her big wedding. While she was sleeping she had a dream that someone was digging a big hole. She tried to look at the face of the person but she couldn’t see who it was. She started walking towards the person in her bare feet. The ground was wet and soggy. As she got closer to the person she saw the hole getting bigger and bigger. She could smell the essence of the earth. It smelled horrible. Just as she was about to see who it was she woke up. She was in a sweat. She was shaking. She needed to tell Jim about her dream. But the plane was landing, and soon Maggie and Jim would be on the beach in Hawaii. They both were having a wonderful time. It was a great honeymoon for both. But time moves quickly and it was time for them to head home. Jim had bought Maggie her dream home only Maggie didn’t know it yet. When they got in the car to go a hotel, Jim started laughing out loud. Maggie wondered why Jim was laughing. Jim told her to close her eyes. They had just one more block to go. Maggie kept her eyes closed all the way. When the car stopped Jim told Maggie to open her eyes. Maggie’s eyes got big as saucers. All she could say was on my God.
Maggie asked Jim who’s house it was. When Jim told her it was there’s she jumped into Jim’s arms and held him tight. Maggie started crying. She knew her life was going to be very special.
As the weeks went by they started fixing up the house with lots of furniture. A month later Maggie came down sick. She had never had been sick a day in her life. When Jim came home from work Maggie was on the couch crying. Jim took her to the hospital.
After a few blood test the doctor came into the room and told Maggie the good news. Maggie was pregnant. Maggie was so happy. She always wanted a baby boy to name him Jim. When Maggie looked over at Jim she saw a disappointed look on his face. Why wasn’t he happy too? The doctor set up an appointment for Maggie to see a baby doctor. When they left the hospital Jim walked way ahead of Maggie and sat in the car.
Maggie asked him what was wrong. Jim started hollowing at Maggie making it seem as though it was all her fault. Jim asked her if she ever heard of birth control pills. Maggie never saw this side of Jim before. She was getting scared. She started to cry. Jim told her he was sorry but he didn’t want a baby so soon.
Maybe she could get an abortion he asked. Maggie was furious now. She was not going to kill her baby for anyone. Not even Jim. As the months went by Maggie was getting bigger and bigger. Her due date was approaching fast. Jim was sleeping on the couch. His excuse was that he didn’t want to hurt the baby.
But Maggie knew different. Jim had changed right before Maggie’s eyes. He wasn’t the same loving husband that she once knew. She thought that after the baby came he would become loving again. The day finally arrived. Maggie woke up Jim in the middle of the night with bad pains in her stomach.
She told him the baby was coming. Jim told her he was to tired to take her to the hospital. She would have to drive herself there.
Maggie started the car up and drove to the hospital. On the way her pains were two minutes apart. She was worried she may not make it. But up ahead she saw the hospital all lit up. She parked the car and walked into the hospital. As soon as the nurse saw her she put Maggie in a wheel chair and brought her up to the maternity room. It wasn’t long before Maggie had her beautiful baby girl. She wanted a boy but when she saw her baby girl she fell in love with her. She named the baby after her mother. She thought maybe that was the best thing she could do for her mother. So Carol Ann was the name she picked out.
The next day she waited for Jim to come and see her and his new daughter. She called him on the phone but there was no answer.
Her mother came in to see Maggie and the baby. Her face was all black and blue. Maggie knew what had happened. She tried to get her mother to leave her step father but she needed the money he brought into the house. Maggie’s mother was delighted to know that her grand daughter was named after her. A big smile came over her face. Maggie never saw her mother smile like that before. Towards the early evening Jim finally came to see Maggie. When he found out it was a girl he became furious. He didn’t want to see the baby. He again told Maggie she should have gotten an abortion. Then he walked out of the room. Maggie cried her self to sleep that night. The next morning Maggie got ready to go home with her new baby. She was so sure that Jim would be there to pick her up. But he didn’t come. Maggie told the nurse that she would have to drive herself home. There was no one else that could do it. The nurse agreed so Maggie drove her and the baby home. When Maggie got to the house , no one was home. She put the baby in her crib and drifted off to sleep on the couch. It wasn’t long before she had the same dream she had on the plane. Only this time she could see more of the dream. She saw a field that she never saw before. And in the distance she could see someone still digging.
Her feet were wet and soggy. But she still walked in the distance to see who was digging a hole in the ground. As she got closer
She saw a woman standing on the left side of her. It was her mother. The woman was crying. Her face was smashed in.
Maggie tried to wake up from her dream. She didn’t want to see her mother’s face like that. Her mother came closer to Maggie. She was moving her lips but nothing came out. Maggie knew she was trying to tell her something but Maggie could not hear her.
Maggie could hear a baby crying from far away. She tried to snap out of her dream and heard Carol Ann crying. She ran up the stairs to see what was wrong with the baby. She picked the baby up and the baby fell apart in her arms. Maggie started screaming so loud she woke her self up. She was shaking like a leaf. Never before did she ever dream such a horrible dream like now. She went up stairs and the baby was still sleeping. The baby looked so beautiful and peaceful. Maggie stroked her face. Her face was so smooth. If only Jim could see her. Maggie knew he would fall in love with her too. Around midnight Jim came home. He had been drinking. He fell over the coffee table and just laid there. All Maggie could see was her step father.
She woke Jim up and helped him into bed. At 2 am the baby started crying. Maggie did not hear her because she was so exhausted. Jim rolled over in bed and saw Maggie sleeping. He tried to wake her up. But he couldn’t. so he went to the baby’s room and picked up Carol Ann. He sat down in the chair and stared at her for a long time. She was a beautiful baby he thought. He carried her down stairs and heated up her bottle.
Then he went back up stairs and sat in the rocker and fed her.
The next morning Maggie got up. The house was silent.
She ran up the stairs and there was Carol Ann and Jim sound asleep in the chair. A big smile came over Maggie’s lips.
She walked over and kissed Jim on the forehead. He woke up
Still holding his daughter in his arms. He smiled at Maggie.
He was glad she didn’t have an abortion. He could feel the love he had for his little girl in his heart. As months went by Jim started getting mean again. He still helped with his daughter. But he seemed restless. Like he wanted to run away and never come back. Maggie tried to dismiss it so she could enjoy her daughter. She knew Jim needed help. Maybe a counselor could help him. She knew she couldn’t. one evening Maggie put Carol Ann to bed for the night. Jim was not home yet. So Maggie finished the dishes and watched TV for awhile.
The door opened and in walked Jim. He was smiling. He told Maggie he had gone to a counselor. He wanted to surprise Maggie. Jim was told that work was getting to much for him and he was getting burned out. They gave him some meds to take, to calm his nerves. Maggie was so happy. She held Jim and cried tears of joy. Maggie didn’t know that counselor’s office was open at 8.30 at night. Jim told her that the counselor was working late. So she could see him anyway. Jim went up stairs to get undressed. Maggie was right behind him. She stopped to look in on the baby. But the baby was gone. Maggie started screaming. Jim ran into the room and looked all around for the baby. He noticed the window was opened and there was a ladder beside the house. Maggie went to call the police. But Jim stopped her. He told her the baby had to be missing 24 hours before they could do anything. Maggie could not sit around doing nothing. She had to find her baby. She ran out of the house with her night gown on in bare feet. She jumped in the car and started looking up and down the street. As she went farther she saw the field that was in her dream. She stopped the car and got out. She ran beside the field and saw a figure digging a hole. Her feet were wet and soggy. But she kept running towards the figure. All of a sudden she saw her mother stumbling towards her. Maggie grabbed her mother and saw that her face was pushed in. she knew her mother was going to die. Maggie told her Carol Ann was missing. Her mother told her she knew all about it. And tried to stop it but she couldn’t.
Her mother told Maggie that the step father smashed her in the face with a shovel. But the mother kept fighting him. Until she couldn’t fight anymore. Then her mother collapsed on the ground. Maggie ran up to where the figure was. The figure was throwing dirt into the hole. When Maggie got close enough she saw that it was her step father. She looked in the hole and there was her baby daughter covered with dirt. She tried to gram the shovel from her step father’s hands. But he was stronger then her. He kept yelling some thing about his little sister. It seems his mother had a baby girl and the father didn’t want her because he said little girls were the devil’s children. So his father buried his little sister alive in the ground. Now the step father had to bury Carol Ann the same way. Maggie jumped on his back and started pulling his hair. But he flipped her over his back. And she hit her head on a rock. The step father started to throw dirt into the hole. The baby started crying. The more she cried the faster he threw the dirt in the hole. All of a sudden someone grabbed the step father from behind and threw him on the ground. He looked up and saw that it was his wife. She started kicking him in the face and ribs. For some reason he dropped the shovel on the ground. The mother grabbed the shovel and started hitting her husband in the face, over and over. Then she fell to the ground. After a few minutes Maggie woke up and heard a faint cry coming from the hole. She jumped in the hole and rescued her little baby girl. The baby started crying louder and louder. Maggie knew she was ok. When Maggie came out of the hole she noticed her mother and step father dead on the ground. She knew then that her mother just had to stop that mad man from killing her grand daughter. Even if it took her last breath. Which it did. Maggie drove her daughter home. She had to call the police. When she reached the house all the lights were off in the house. She opened the door and put on the parlor light. She went up stairs to tell Jim her story. And to let him know their baby was ok. When she reached the bedroom no one was there. She looked all over the house for Jim. When she got near the garage she could smell a awful odor. She opened up the door and there was Jim in his truck with the motor running. She ran and called the police. When they got there they told Maggie Jim had been dead for about a hour. When the police opened the truck door a piece of paper fell out. He gave it to Maggie to read. The letter said
“My dearest Maggie when you had a baby girl I was so disappointed. I wanted a boy so bad. Someone who I could teach baseball too. And go fishing like father and son. I was the one who went to your step father’s house. I took him out drinking to talk to him. When he told me about the devil’s children I asked him if he could kill our daughter. I gave him 500.00 to do it. You see Maggie I had no use for a daughter. When your mother found out she was going to tell you. I couldn’t let that happen. So I told the step father to kill her too. I am sorry my dearest but it had to be done. I know you will be lonely without your child but some day you will have another one. Hope it’s a boy. Love Jim. “
