Just a little something I found amusing enough to write about. Enjoy.
Aaaahhhh...to be 5 years old again and feel the anticipation of awaiting Santa's delivery, and tearing into presents first thing Christmas morning. But what happens when the pressure of having to wait becomes too much? Well, just ask my little boy, Tre! He discovered a few wrapped presents that I had hidden in my closet. Temptation got the best of him, and he couldn't help himself. I walked in to find him, mouth wide open, eyes bulging, with a huge smile on his face. "Mom! You bought me a Thomas the Tank Engine book! Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!" I was mixed with emotion. On one hand, I wanted to smile at his mischief and how excited he was about the book. On the other hand, I couldn't help but yell. "Tre!" And then the idea hit me..."That's not for you. Mommy and Daddy bought that for another little boy who loves Thomas too! You just opened his present!"
The look on Tre's face went from blissful happiness to sadness and guilt. His eyes began to well up with tears as I tried to explain to him that this other little boy wasn't going to get much for Christmas, so Mommy and Daddy thought that it would be nice if we bought him a present. Tre was filled with questions. "Mommy, what's the little boy's name? Where does he live? His Mommy and Daddy are broke and can't buy him anything?" They flowed out of his mouth so fast, that my head was swirling trying to come up with fake answers. "Just don't worry about it, Tre. Mommy will rewrap the book, and we'll make sure that the little boy gets it. You can even help us give it to him." Tre was content with that answer, but still felt guilty for opening the present. Tears still flowing he said, "Mommy, I'm very sorry that I got into your closet and opened that little boys present. Is he going to be sad that I opened it?" With that I looked him straight in the eyes and gave him the biggest hug I could. "No baby. That little boy will never even know that you opened it. I'm going to wrap it again, and it will be our little secret."
Gone were the tears and the guilt. He lifted his little head off of my shoulder and looked me square in the eye. "Well then where's MY presents?" Little did he know that if he'd have dug a little further back in the closet, that he would've found the rest of the presents for him and his brothers. I smiled and simply responded, "I don't know. I think that will have to stay Mommy and Daddy's secret." "Oh, man.", he said. And with that he turned around and walked out of my room. I can't wait to see the look on his face when he gets to open all of his presents, and that book is included. I plan on having the camera there to capture it!
