A Woodland Friend Gran Maureen
I was walking home early one drizzly evening when a Fox appeared at my side..!
Even though startled at the time on seeing this animal so close to me, I nonetheless became very aware of how his coat gleamed and glistened with a light covering of raindrops and how his bushy tail was curled upwards, this gave him the appearance of a unique kind of proud magnificence. In this moment of my fleeting awe, we stared at each other as if held in a kind of special ‘rapport’ like kindred spirits of a forgotten time long past.
Then sadly this unusual momentary contact was broken as if with an ‘eerie’ silence, and I watched as if from afar the view of the Fox wandering off proudly into the night..!
In the course of the following weeks’ I casually strolled the same route in the early evenings with a vague hope of seeing that proud animal again. In my own mind, I smiled inwardly as I considered that the Fox was probably less impressed with me than I was of him, and with an inward chuckle, I felt a little disappointed.
The next evening, I was delighted to get another glimpse of the Fox again, and I was convinced it was the same animal, why?
The Fox stared at me from the other side of the road for a few moments as if in mutual recognition before pushing itself through the roadside hedges to enter the nearby Woods.
Exactly a week later, and much to the sheer delight of my two grandchildren’ my friend the Fox appeared inside my very own garden! Sadly, the Fox was frightened away by my grandchildren running out all excited from the house towards it. That was the day my two grandchildren, Paul & Michael happily christened the Fox with the name of Freddy..!
Every day after school the children left items of food out in my back garden for Freddy the Fox, and this form of food had been kindly advised’ by their own individual classroom teachers at school.
Then we began to notice that the birds were eating these morsels of food in the mornings after lying uneaten in the garden all night, and we began to think that Freddy would never come to visit us again.
A month later young Paul, Michael and myself were flabbergasted with surprise to see through my back window into the garden and see Freddy with two bushytailed cubs frolicking at his side..!
Since that happy last brief visit from ‘Freddy the Fox’ and his little family, we continually and laughingly correct ourselves on renaming ‘Freddy’ as “Florence” now..!
