Josh had been trying to program his elevator rides in the Atlanta office building where he worked to the max. In other words, he couldn’t see the new blonde often enough.
He’d tried to get some info from Tracy, the long-time receptionist in the lobby, but it was scant. Receptionists rarely have a decent second, he’d decided.
“The new blonde. Do you know her name?” he’d asked Tracy.
“All I can say is that she works in 702. Allgood Insurance, as you know, and that she’s been working a total of 6 days now,” Tracy said.
Josh worked on the ninth floor. He made up his mind to drink from the water fountain on the seventh floor henceforth. That was an excuse to take the elevator more frequently.
A day or two later Josh hit pay dirt. He was waiting to ride back up when the new blonde approached. She pressed to go down. Josh made up his mind to ride down also.
On the way down Josh finally got up the nerve to speak.
“Too nice to be indoors, isn’t it?” he asked.
“Yes, it is,” she said. Josh found the velvet-like quality of her voice irresistible.
How could he get her name? He tried a tactic.
“Are you the Phoebe someone was looking for the other day? They came to ninth floor by mistake.”
She looked at Josh but didn’t say anything at first.
“Wasn’t me,” she then answered. “Can’t be many Phoebes in the building, can there?”
“Guess not,” Josh said. He looked a bit sad that the tactic had failed.
The elevator reached the lobby and the door opened. As she stepped out, the blonde glanced back at Josh.
“I’m Helen of Helen,” she said and walked away.
The next day Tracy was able to clear up Josh’s mystery lady.
“Now I know,” she told Josh. “She’s Helen Burgess of Helen, Georgia. Her parents have a big place up there. Now you know too.”
“Thanks a million,” Josh told Tracy. “I’m thirsty. Guess I’ll go up for water.”
“How about bringing me a cup since I did the ‘leg work’,” Tracy asked.
Josh couldn’t kill a smile.
“No problem, Tracy,” he responded. “Be a pleasure.”
