This piece is not meant for responsible hunters who are truly concerned about game control..but only ones who get a perverse joy in killing.
Growing up on a farm, I would hunt after school. Bringing home a rabbits or squirrels for mom to cook was always a good feeling, because I felt I had contributed, and never felt remorse over the taking of a life.
When I returned home from Viet-Nam, I went hunting again, trying to bring back some normalicy to my life and spirit. After shooting the very first squirel, I went over and picked him up. As I held the dead animal in my hand, for the first time in my life I truly realized what I had done.....taken a life. I started to cry, buried the squirrel, left the woods and have never again killed a living thing, (bigger than an insect)
I still love to shoot, but only targets.
So to all you responsible hunters out there, I hold you no ill will....but, for the others...I think it would be a bit more sport if the animals had guns to shoot back.

Walt

I'm glad they don't shoot back! I'd have been dead a very long time ago. I hunt for food, not just sport. But, as I told you before, if we didn't kill the deer down here, they'd kill more of us. We feed so many people with the deer we kill, I can't bring myself to stop. It is much more than sport for us. Thanks for not holding a grudge against us responsible hunters. I think that was part of God's plan for us to survive off of the land. *smiles* Jean

So do I, Walt. So do I.

A good food for thought write. Your thoughts and reasons are valid and I know many share your opinion. I do understand game control for I have also seen the suffering of herds of deer that were left to over populate game lands. I know that things we experience in life does draw a clearer picture of our actions. Thank you for your honest sharing. Lady J

I can understand your feelings but there are legitimate reasons for game control and there are many people who hunt responsibly. You have made a good point for why you yourself do no longer hunt and actually I was once an avid hunter and I no longer hunt either, but I do not hold have anything against responsible hunting within controlled guidelines.

I know the feeling......not so very long ago I was holding my dogs leeches after they had bitten the pigs ears off...my husband was so mad at them he shot them dead while still in my hand. I could not let them go in time...and I could feel the life going out of them one by one.

I cried for days.....I could understand why he did it later after I saw the damage they had done...but will never forget that horrifying moment! I am lucky I did not got killed that day myself!!

Love Tinka
