There lived a poor farmer in a village of Umumba,his name is Mr Nwamba. He was married with a daughter and two sons. A day came that he unfortunately was attacked by a wild animal in his farm and was killed. The family was devastated at the news of the death,as their bread winner had gone. Life became very hard and unbearable with them and at a time the eldest son took ill and died.
His surviving son had to look for a means of survival to sustain his mother and the sister, but unfortunately he was not as hardworking as the father and the eldest brother. He resorted to pilfering from people. One day,he stole from the kings barn and was caught. All his plea for pardon fall on deaf ears, and he was banished from the community for fifteen years according to custom and tradition. On his way out of the community, he swore to come back to the community with his wrath and to change the family status from poor to rich. His mother and the sister cried profusely for his banishment but had to bear it and confine to their fate.
He went away to an unknown land where he was fortunate to have met a fisherman who taught him how to fish. One day as he was fishing,he remembered his mother,his sister and began to wept. Suddenly, a river goddess appeared to him on the bank of the river and urged him not to cry again as his tears will be wiped away. He was gripped with fear but was urged not to fear by the goddess,but to go home and never come back to the river till after seven days. He hurriedly went away and came back after seven days, but could not find his fishing materials. He started searching for the materials and got to a point in the river where he suddenly dissappeared into a spiritual realm and found himself in the river goddess kingdom where he was welcomed by the goddess. He saw all his fishing materials in the kingdom and was surprise how it got there. He was told by the goddess that the materials had been used in exchange to his wealth and hence forth he will no longer be a fisherman but a rich man. He was given a magic ring, which he was instructed to always use it for any thing he desire, including protection. But he was warned not to use it for any harm against any man nor maltreat,or cheat any body. He was also told not to serve any other god than the the river goddess,him and his entire family,and also not to aspire to rule any kingdom. He was immediately bade farewell and instantly he saw himself back on the river and started going back home.
On his way back home he saw a box far from him,shining than silver and was captivating. He was very tired and decided to go his way but was kept back by the power in the ring he was given.He then noticed some strange signs from the ring and realised his potentials with the ring and the promise by the river goddess. He hurriedly moved closer to the box and opened it and was amazed to see that the box was filled with clean bundles of money. He was terrified as he had never seen such a huge sum. He summoned the courage and carried the box home. He therefore decided to go back to his community to see his mother and sister even though he had not completed his fifteen years term of exile, it was remaining five years.
His countenance and way of life changed immediately as he began to swim in affluence. He went back to his community with one of the best luxury cars in the land, and was an incredible moment in the land as no one had ever seen such a luxury car in the land. He was spreading some bundles of money to the villagers as he made his way back to his family compound. The villagers were dumbfounded and could not beleive their eyes.
In his compound, his mother now aged could not beleive her eyes as she cried with tears of joy and he hugged the mother and the sister who is now grown up. He was welcomed back in the squalor where the mother and sister were living. He now remembered his words when he was leaving the community for exile. He engaged the best builders in the land to pull down the squalor and build for him a masterpeiece, and well designed palace, where he wrote at the entrance gate "Welcome to the Palace of Nwaeze of Umueze" which signifies that he had automatically changed his family name from Nwamba to Nwaeze and the community name from Umumba to Umueze. Many of the villagers were not in support of him while others were, but they later began to give him full support as he doles out money to buy them over,as the saying goes "if you cannot beat them you join them".
He began to be intorxicated with the powers given to him and forgot the warnings also. He now desired to dethrone the reigning king of the land and to become the king. He summoned the youths and not the elders of the land and told them his desire, but the youths could not agree nor disagree with him and was left to take decisions alone. But the ruling king heard the arrangements and summoned the elders to seek for their opinion,moreover as he could not complete his term of exile. The elders were divided in their opinions as some were in support and some could not support nor dissapprove. He manouvered them with his powers and money and was sworn in as king of the land despite the fact that the ruling king was still alive.
The ruling king could not recognise him as king and challenged his legitimacy but he sent forth killers who killed the king, and he finally beacme the king of the land.
His reign became so terrible in the land that he was asking his elders to always prostrate to his entourage or else you risk your life. The community became hell to the inhabitants as they cry daily for help. And he subjected every villager to worship him as their god. This infuriated the river goddess who appearead in his gate as a begger one early morning to ask for alms,but he ordered his guards to throw the begger out of his compound. But unfortunately the guards were surrendered and caused to dance naked round the community by the powers the goddess possesed, though she could not immediately manifest to him what she was but only a mere begger. He was astonished by the action and decided to make use of his magic rings against the begger but unfortunately the ring disappeared from him to the beggers hand. It was thereafter that the begger turned to be the river goddess and he was afraid and began to ask for pardon, but the goddess told him that it was too late as he could not heed to the warnings given to him. The goddess struck him and the entire family dead and all his wealth were consumed by fire and the goddess disappeared. The entire village was free and there was great jubilation in the land.
