My name is Jose'. Jose' Varquez. I am nine (but many people say I am mature for my age and act older).

I guess that's what being an only kid is about. I also was forced to grow up after my mami and papi died and now live with my abuelo Armando. I had no choice BUT to grow up.

The other day, at school, I made a new friend. My new friend's name is Johnny Sandusky, and he seems to be an okay kid (although painfully shy). I honestly can't blame him: he's been kicked around a lot, and he's had so many health problems it isn't a BIT funny! He can't walk that far except on crutches, and he is in a wheelchair the rest of the time. He is also hard of hearing and can't see all that well (he relies on hearing-aids and must wear Coke-bottle-lensed glasses in order to see). He also is dyslexic, which means he has trouble reading. It doesn't help that Ronee' Reaux (she's his sister; they're the same age) is a genius and is in the smart kids class. People are always bragging about Ronee', and that only upsets him.

I like Johnny a lot. He's funny, and he burps better and louder than the other kids in class. He also has a KILLER collection of Poke'man trading cards; I don't have HALF of what he does!!! He also plays a MEAN game of Spit and can whup your butt at video games!

And TALK about a family! He DEFINITELY has a FAMILY!! One thing, it's BIG. His mama and dad adopted a whole bunch of misfit kids, and they are ALL super friendly. I've met some of his brothers and sisters, and I am looking forward to meeting his folks. (I think I've seen his mom at the hospital..hear she's a nurse. His dad works at Wal*Mart as a greeter. I think I've seen him at Wal*Mart. He's REALLY tall--nearly 7'!!)

I don't understand something. HOW can some nice kid be treated so BADLY?? He gets teased UNMERCIFULLY by a lot of the kids at school. If it's not about his handicaps it's about his being slow to learn or his poor reading skills. Or they tease him because he's adopted and looks NOTHING like his mama or dad!
Honestly--it about makes me WANT TO VOMIT UP MY LUNCH!! I get SO MAD I want to HURT somebody!

That's another thing. I want to be a professional boxer when I grow up.

I CAN'T wait for my abuelo Armando to meet my new pal, Johnny. He'd like him as much as I do, I bet!

And besides--Johnny can speak some Spanish so my abuelo won't have much trouble understanding him (although he speaks Spanish funny--he has this weird German/New York accent when he talks).
