A young preteen with a disability is striving to become a singer.

Hi!

My name's Alyssa.  Alyssa Rodriguez.  I am twelve years old.  When I grow up, I want to be a singer.

I have been taking voice lessons now for five years, and I think I've gotten to be pretty good in my singing.  My friend Ronee' Le-Anne Reaux inspired me; she was the one who was the catalyst behind my decision to become a singer.

I have long, dark brown, almost black, hair, big, bright eyes of black, and fair skin.  I kinda' look like a young Jennifer Lopez.  Or maybe the late tejano singer, Selena.  I have been told by people that I am very pretty.

When people see me, they are amazed because I am so young, and have a very mature singing voice.  I sound like a grown woman (or so it's been said).  They're also surprised because I'm an amputee, use crutches to get around.  (I lost my leg to flesh-eating disease when I was seven.)

I don't know why this makes people surprised; I'd rather them see me, not my disability.  I am not my disability; I'm a person with one.

I have sung at church several times (am involved with the King's Kids worship team/children's choir).  I have also sung at several local festivals, including Cinco de Mayo en Nashville, the Nashville Fourth of July BLAST! Celebration, and CMA Music Festival, among others.  I've also sung in Texas and Arkansas.

I sing as part of mi familia's conjunto/mariachi band.  I sing lead, play the maracas, marimba (sort of like a zylephone).  I love it.  I love making people happy with what I do; it gives me the most joy!

Next month, I'm trying out for "America's Got Talent" when it comes back here to Nashville.  I think I can make it.

Mi familia is pulling for me.  They think I have a gift from God.  They are probably my biggest fans.  To see their support, hear them cheering for me when I'm on stage is the fuel that keeps me going.

I am a very happy person who loves God, life.  I am trying to get Ronee' 's brother, Johnny, to notice me.  I have the hots for him; he is so cute, even though he's three years older than me, fifteen.  I love his blue eyes, his white hair, his quiet, shy demeaner.  And like me, he's disabled.

I wonder if Johnny will show interest in me.  I hope so because I think he's very sweet!

And is good looking.  I look at him, and I melt!  LOL

Well, mi madre is calling.  She wants me to pick up after the kitty; kitty made a mess on the floor. YUCK.  (I think you may figure out what kind of mess she did.  Pew!! LOL)

Adios, mi amiga.  Hasta luego! (That means, so long, friend! See you later!)

~Love, Alyssa Joy Rodriguez. :D

The pic? That's of mi tia Gracia, doing the ballet folklorico at last year's Cinco De Mayo.  Isn't she beautiful?? :)

I loved the line about being a person with a disability...
Profound...if only more people could figure that out!

Karen:

I thought for sure I have commented on this one. Funny that my comment is not here.

It's good that Alyssa loves to sing and is keeping herself busy at church. Seems to me that she is leading a happy life too dispite of her disability. Wonderful attitude!!!
