Brand, seeing the initial success of their archers, ordered that front rank forward to the edge of the trees. Good luck favored the allied kings in that nearly half their force was armed with yew bows; the number was thirty-one and several of them carried two quivers. Brand again drew his sword and began a resolute walk down and back behind the front line, giving orders, encouragement, and an occasional admonition: "Take aim; shoot into their line! ... Keep at it. Remember to take aim ... quickly! Quick about it, while they're exposed. You there! A shot out into the fjord will not bring down your man! good eye there, sir. Well done!"

     The king did not shout. Rather, he spoke in a volume, though easily heard, meant to instill confidence and to convey the strength and determination of their commander. "Do not fear those men. Odin has delivered them to us. We are the right on this day. With Thor and  his hammer at our side, we will prepare them for the Valkyries."

     Espen, hearing much of his friend's talk, soon followed the example. Standing in front of the longer second rank, he started moving along its length. These warriors were armed with sword, axe, spear, javelin and at least one large hammer. "The archers in front of us are brave indeed. They have opened battle for us with no protection before them, but the deadly sting of their own missiles. Yet they hold firm, softening and thinning our foe, making our part to come all the easier. And soon, you will return the favor, moving through them, protecting with sword, axe and shield. So ready your weapons and set your hearts strong. I will be with you, surely much the prouder for it."
