I have another bad story to tell you about something that happened in my life.

This is M'buti Sormiento; I am 25 1/2 years old.

I nearly died last year at Christmas--actually, it was ALMOST a year-and-a-half ago when this particular thing happened in my life.

I went Christmas shopping on December 23, 1999, with my new husband, Roberto, and with our good friend, Louisiana Sandusky (she had a few "last-minute" gifts to get). Everything was fine; nothing seemed wrong. I was feeling pretty good; in fact, I felt the best I had in WEEKS. The next day, around 2:30, I started feeling rather weak and rather nauseated, but I just thought it was because of the flu. (Several of Louisiana's kids had the flu at that time; I just figured I'd caught a mild case of it because we had seen the children earlier in the day.) Well, as the evening wore on, I found out that I had trouble keeping my food down (even water), and my one leg was really hurting bad. I also felt dizzy and seemed to have some trouble with my balance and with my eyes. (I kept seeing "two of everything".) I was hoping that, if it WAS the flu, I wouldn't pass it on to my baby son, Jubaki, who was then 6 months old.

WEIRD. I knew SOMETHING was wrong. But I was sure I'd be feeling somewhat better in the morning, if I had gone to bed to get some needed rest. So that was what I did.

The next day, I was throwing up so much I ended up throwing up bloody mucus, and I felt worse than I'd ever felt in my life. I went to get up--and don't remember ANYTHING afterwards.

I had passed out.

It turned out that I was "out" for over 2 weeks. When I "came to" 2 1/2 weeks later, I found out that my body hurt, and especially my legs. They were KILLING me; it felt as though a lion had been gnawing on my legs. I felt like someone had been using my body for a punching bag: every muscle, every joint, every bone THROBBED with PAIN.

It was the WORST pain I'd EVER felt in my life, even more than when I had been burned and then had the wire cage on my leg for months afterward.

It was NASTY.

The doctor told me I had nearly died; I had a SEVERE bacterial infection called "necrotizing fasciitis", or "flesh-eating disease", which is where bad bacteria that gets into a cut or something starts to "rot out" the skin and causes massive infection that requires surgical care or the person WILL DIE in a MATTER OF HOURS, it's that bad.

Necrotizing fasciitis. I'd never even heard of it. But WHATEVER it was, it sure sounded NASTY!!!!

At first, I'd thought my leg was gone, but then I looked down, and I was relieved to see it was still there, but it was wrapped in bandages and gauze and stuff. (It's a good thing I didn't see what was UNDERNEATH!!) But talk about PAIN!!!!!!!

It ended up that I was in the hospital for months afterward. I coudn't eat, and I couldn't sleep, the pain was so bad. I ended up losing a lot of weight, and I ended up having to be fed by a tube in my nose (and then by a tube in my chest). It was really bad.

When I got out, I was a very sick woman. I needed a lot of care. I couldn't walk, I was so weak, and the thought of food nauseated me. I couldn't eat or do much of ANYTHING for myself. I was in really bad shape.

But Roberto and Lousiana (BLESS THEM!!) were willing to put up with me, even when I was nasty to them. But they were so concerned about me, so I ended up having the surgery that would, in time, save my life. (Before I had the surgery my weight had dropped from 130 down to a SKINNY 75 pounds. I looked like I had umkiwi [AIDS]. I looked EVIL.)

Now I am STILL recovering from my NF, but the WORST times are FINALLY behind me. Still, I'll NEVER forget what I have gone through.

It was really a BAD time.

And it's a MIRACLE I even survived at all; most people who have NF die, or are left severly disabled (as I had been). It's also a miracle that I DIDN'T lose my leg (or ANYTHING ELSE!)!!!!

I guess Jesus must want me around......

Author's note: Necrotizing Fasciitis (nek-ro-tie-zing fa-she-eye-tiss) is nothing to be taken lightly. Necrotizing fasciitis is about as deadly of a disease anyone can possibly encounter, and those who get it deservedly need our help and our prayers, especially if they happen to survive such a deadly infection. I have always been fascinated with medical drama, and to see people triumphing over such incredible odds is nothing short of a sense of amazement to me. This is why I wrote this story, told from the viewpoint of someone who actually SURVIVED the disease, and how she managed to triumph over such great odds placed upon her. I don't personally know anyone who had NF, but I hope and pray I or anyone I know NEVER, EVER gets this disease, and if they do, I pray nothing but the best of blessings and hope from Above!! These are another group of people who deservedly need our support, as often too many people don't understand the implications behind this awful disease....
