Our son, Luca Daniel, is a living miracle child.
When he was born six years ago, doctors didn't hold much in the way of hope. He was born with spina bifida that left his lower half paralyzed; they said he'd probably never walk.
He's now walking. With crutches and braces on his legs, but he's still walking.
Luca has had surgeries, so many, we've lost count. Seems like he's in the hospital every few months, for one thing or another or another operation. Some of these surgeries were minor; others were major, so much, he's nearly died.
Luca is one of the main reasons behind my hair being prematurely grey.
I wouldn't trade it for the world; we love him too much! He's a blessing, and we hope others see the potential we see in our son.
My name is Courtney Williamson. I, my husband, Duke (real name's Donovan, but I've always called him "Duke"), our older child, Lark Marissa (she's eight), and Luca live in a nice, quiet subdivision in Omaha, Nebraska. I am a homemaker; Duke, meanwhile, works as an auto mechanic. We have a good life, even in light of our youngest child's disabilities.
We go to church every Sunday at Milkweed Baptist Church. We have a busy, active lifestyle between Luca's hospital stays. My husband, when not woring or at church, plays golf or goes bowling with friends; I, meanwhile, take the children to the park or to the mall. I also play games with them, encourage exercise and fresh air.
When it's too cold out, we play games, family interactive games, indoors. Same applies if it's raining.
Anyway, back to my story. Luca doesn't let his medical problems get to him: he's too busy loving life! When he isn't recovering from surgery, in pain, or ill, he is a very active, happy little boy. You should see him run in races on his crutches; he's one of the fastest kids around!
In addition to races, Luca loves to dance (again, on crutches), play with his toy race cars (he wants to be a NASCAR driver when he grows up; his favorite driver is Matt Kenseth), play ball games (football mainly), draw, paint, color. He also loves to sing, watch football or auto racing on television. When it comes to cartoons, he loves Bugs Bunny; he has a whole collection of Bugs Bunny DVDS.
We don't allow him to watch the cartoons they show today. They are not suited for kids, or are stupid, make absolutely no sense.
Bugs Bunny is violent, too, but it's more slapstick comedy, like the old fashioned Laurel and Hardy or Three Stooges they used to show on television back when I was a child. (Shows you how old we are, huh?? LOL) Television back then meant something; other than a few shows now, television today is nothing but junk!
