Steffi writes in her journal while waiting to see her doctor; she has an appointment at 11:15.

Friday, May 1, 2009, Fort Worth, Texas~

Dear Journal~

I sit here at Basham Hospital here in Fort Worth, Texas; I have an appointment with my orthopedic doctor in about twenty minutes or so.  Fell about a week and a half ago at school, fractured my hip; it really hurts!

He wants to see how I am doing.  Meanwhile, I sit here to try to while away the time.  I thank God my boyfriend, Tank, is with me; it's been harder on him, as he's been the one to take care of me.

I have had to use my wheelchair; the only time I'm out of it is if I have to take a shower, go to the potty, or go to bed; any other time, I'm in my chair, and it's hard on my bum, not to mention, my hip.  I can't walk; walking is off limits for me.

I was at school, going to one of my classes, when I fell.  When I landed, I knew immediately I'd done something; I couldn't get up, and it was instantaneous pain.  I'm talking severe pain, so bad, in fact, I threw up what I'd had for breakfast that morning.  I must have laid there for a good fifteen/twenty minutes before someone helped me.  It was awful!

I was then rushed (by ambulance) to Basham Memorial, where I spent the night; I was then released a day later, but every week I have to go see my doctor, to make sure it's healing well.  It seems to be, but I can't walk until this has healed.

I hate it because I can't persue my tennis or soccer games, and seeing I have always been the athletic type, not being able to play my sports or excercise has been rough.

Poor Tank has been an angel through all of this, but I am sure he'd rather be out with his friends than staying home to take care of me.  I feel like it's all my fault, and I have been depressed since all of this happened.

Well, the nurse has called me, so I must go.  Pray I get a good report from Doctor Rampas; I don't need any more problems cropping up!

Thanks in advance!

~Love, your friend, Steffi.  :)

P.S.:  The weather hasn't been good here lately:  chance of storms nearly every night, and tomorrow and Sunday, we could have more chances of storms, possibly severe.  Arrgghh, I don't need this!  I hate storms!!  Pray we get through this stormy period and pray this stupid pattern changes; I'm sick of storms!!!!!  Thanks again!!

I don't think the words have been invented that can truly describe pain, but experience of similar pain is a good measure. After breaking my leg I have a strong idea of what Steffi's pain must feel like. Good write, Karen.

Steffi, haven't you seen people in wheel chairs playing tennis? and they are permanently in one. Tank I am sure will assist.

Good write here Karen. Tells us to be careful of accidents and broken bones, I've had a slipped disc once after giving birth to my son, and it was terrible. I hope Stefi heals fast, it's a difficult process when bones are broken.

all of us are so dependent on both health and weather to keep our perspectives upbeat and "mobile". I can commiserate with the impatience side of things when it's not exactly what we'd either planned or what we've been used to! But, as others have said, it's good to have our expectations and assumptions challenged, and sometimes we need to be aware how much we take these things for granted. I do hope that Steffi soon resumes her tennis and soccer... and that Tank gets his turn to be mollycoddled and spoiled rotten! I'm sure s/he will! As precise and aware as always, Karen. TY Kate xx

You have a way of projecting the "realism" of what is happening in your stories so much so that I feel I am there. Merci, Karen. Amour et paix, ton ami de la C-B, Canada,
