Long black lashes adorning deep-set dark brown eyes that seem to miss very little. Wavy, thick brown hair that tumbles past his eyes in a haphazard mess. A pert nose suitable for planting kisses upon. Dimples flashing in chubby, soft rosy cheeks.
I see this -- and so much more -- when I look upon the face of my little six-year-old son, Oskar, whom we adopted last year from Romania. I can't help but feel a rush of love come into my heart; it's hard to believe that this smiling, laughing little boy is the same one we'd brought home from the airport. Before then, he would spend his days rocking in the corner, weeping openly or banging his head; one wonders what horrors he must have witnessed before he came here to America.
Yet those sad days seem to be but a memory as we watch Oskar laugh as he plays with his kitten, or reads a story in his newly-learned English to his baby sister, Rosie (whom we adopted recently from Korea). We feel proud whenever he masters a new skill or learns a new word in English; he seems to be adapting well to his new home/family/country.
One of Oskar's more endearing traits is his crooked smile. Everytime we see that ear-to-ear grin adorning his chubby face, we can't help but smile ourselves. He looks just like my husband, Rockie: Rockie has a jaunty smile too, and it makes me happy to know that he resembles my husband. They are certainly one of a kind: they have since become the very best of friends!
I wish I can erase whatever pain Oskar must have experienced at that orphanage back in Romania, but it seems that time will be the healer of all wounds. Right now, though, that is forgotten, as I listen to his musical voice enamating through the house; such a happy child he has become! It's been nothing short of miraculous to see the transformation of my son! God has certainly answered our prayers in a big way when he brought us Oskar from Romania (and now Rosie from Korea)! From no children, we have gained two; we are now a family; we are no longer childless!
The sky's the limit for not only Oskar, but for Rosie as well.
Well, I must go now. Rosie is starting to cry; I must see what is giong on. I will write in here again soon with another update. Until then, this is Pattie Wilson saying so long and God bless!
~Love, your friend in Iowa, Pattie Jayne Wilson, Oskar and Rosie's momma. :)
