Tom Whitt continues his journey towards the Gulf Coast States; he's now in Burleson, Texas, headed east.

Burleson, Texas, May 12, 2010~

Tom Whitt here.  I am still on my journey, trying to raise awareness to people about multiple sclerosis or similar diseases.  I have MS, and have had it for ten years now.  I am doing okay, as far as having it goes, but my disease causes me to have to use crutches because my legs are weak.  That's okay:  at least I can still walk and get around!

My wife, Clarabelle, and our sons, Mikey and Paul-Jacques (they are seven and five), have joined me on this trek.  They ride along in the family camper while I walk; that way, if I get sick or run into any sort of trouble along the way, they can help me.  So far, it's been smooth sailing; I pray this continues!

Hopefully by Friday or Saturday, I'll be making it into Cajun Country, Louisiana.  I am looking forward to trying some spicy Cajun food or at least listening to some of the great Cajun music they have there.  I love Cajun music; always have, always will.

My wife is Cajun:  Cajun French on her daddy's side, German and Arapaho Indian on her mother's.  She grew up with that stuff; she indocrinated me into the culture; fell head over heels with it.  When I was able to get around (before my MS got bad), she and I would dance to the Cajun music; it was so much fun; when I had to give it up, it was one of the hardest days of my life!

Right now, though, we're in Burleson, Texas, headed east.  There's talk of storms the next few days; if it does storm, we'll hunker down in our camper and wait for them to let up or go away.  No way am I walking when it's lightning:  have two metal crutches ... instant lightning rods!!  Not good if I get struck by lightning, y'know??

So far, the people I've met along our journey have been very nice to us.  They've also been happy to give some cash for our cause, which I greatly appreciate.  The monies collected will go directly to the Multiple Sclerosis Society; that way, more people can be helped, as I have been.

Well, it's time to get our grub faces on and have some good ol' Texas barbeque:  Clarabelle, the boys, and I are suddenly starving!  I will write in here again, probably sometime this weekend or sometime early next week.  Anyway, you'll hear from me again; that way, y'all can keep tabs on where we are, and where we're headed.  Take care and God bless; keep those prayers coming!  I would greatly appreciate it!

~Sincerely, Tom Whitt.  :)

I wish I were walking with him. Just think of all he gets to see! However, on crutches, it must be a slow and painful journey.

I've heard of others making these cross-country treks. I would suppose it is expensive (for the camper travelers) and likely has some risks involved since one never knows who they will meet out on the road.

Good story, Karen.
