A boy writes about two men in his neighborhood.

I have two neighbors that live together and they are as different as night and day.

Their names are Mac MacLachlan and Bertie Diamond, but I call them "Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde".  You will see why in a bit.

Bertie is quiet, shy, and rather reserved, and somewhat of a recluse: a loner.  He would as soon rather stay home than to go out.  Meanwhile, his partner is as loud, as boisterous, and as obnoxious as they come.  He is always going to the bars to get drunk and is often the life of the party.

Both men are in their fifties.  They both lost their wives several years back and decided to move in together, so they wouldn't have to keep thinking about what they had lost.  A good arrangement, perhaps, but Mac gets on my nerves sometimes because he is such a loudmouth, especially when he comes home lit up like a Christmas tree.

You can practically see the alcohol oozing out of his pores when he goes on one of his benders.

I'm just glad that Mac isn't what one would call a "mean drunk".  He is just goofy in nature and sometimes I wish I could stuff a pillow into my ears, so I wouldn't have to listen to Mac caterwauling one of his Irish songs.  He sings so loud you can hear him all over the neighborhood and people get cranky late of night because he woke them up again with his singing.

I don't know how Bertie puts up with Mac, but as I said, they've been friends a long time.  They probably met in the service: both were in the Air Force.

And it was nice for Mac to let Bertie come live with him after his wife passed on, so I guess that is a good thing, even with all of his idiosyncrasies.

A lot of people think that Mac and Bertie are "fairy nice people" (i.e., gay), but nothing could be further from the truth.  They're just two widowed Veterans who wanted to b together so they wouldn't have to think about their dead wives all the time.

Well, I'd best go.  Gotta go to my dental appointment; I just thought I'd write about my next door neighbors and why I call them "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde".  Hope you liked my story!

Sometimes, Karen, friends, or, for that matter married people or people in relationships give each other what those on the outside cannot see. In this case I think that it's just old fashioned companionship.
