My little brother, Johnny, used to hate school so much.
Every day he would come home in tears, saying just how bad the kids in his class were treating him; or they would laugh at him on the playground. They would tease him because he has a learning disability which hampers his ability to read; and he also has some significant and severe physical disabilities involving his ability to walk, sight, and his hearing and speech.
In other words, Johnny is multiply handicapped, and teaching such a child is quite a daunting task to many teachers.
He used to have a lot of trouble with his reading. Every little thing could throw off his concentration at the drop of a hat, and he would often see letters or numbers mixed up or backwards. For example, to him, "dog" looked more like "god"; if there was a sentence that went "the dog looked at me", Johnny would have read it like this: "the god liked at me", causing the kids in his class to laugh at him..and causing his cheeks to flame bright red in embarrassment. After having tests, it was found that my little brother was dyslexic. Dyslexia means that he sees certain letters or numbers backwards, upside down, or mixed up, and as a result, he often has trouble with his writing or reading skills.
But there is hope. For the past year, he has been receiving extra help after school from a special learning center called Sylvan, which works with problem readers like Johnny; and they have been an invaluable tool in his quest to overcome his reading and writing handicaps. His grades have improved dramatically, and when he was once getting D's and F's in every class on his report card, he is now getting B's and even A's!! School is becoming so much easier for him, and his teachers are absolutely amazed at his progress. It is as though they were teaching an entirely different child!
Now, Johnny is in the fourth grade, and he is nearly caught up to the other kids in his class; but he still goes to the Sylvan classes three times a week after school. He is now eager to learn each and every new thing he encounters, and he can't wait to get to school to show off what he has learned to his classmates or teachers. He is a changed child, and the change in him has been nothing short of miraculous!
It is amazing just what a little bit of extra help can do for a child with such significant special needs; but if a child IS given hope or a chance, chances are he WILL succeed! And nothing will stop this child from learning all he can!!
