A short Sci-fi story about a guy who used to wake up one hour earlier...

     ................................................................................................................

Beep-beep-beep… 07.15

With sleep- wrinkles on his face and tight eyes he tries to find the alarm clock. With a quick move he turns off the sickening sound with his hand. After opening his eyelids and stretching his body, he looks out of the window. Grey, heavy clouds cover the American sky. Some lightning appears among them. He sits for a while in this position and shuffles his stunted hair with an empty look in his eyes. He gets up slowly and almost crawls to the bathroom. He arrives in front of the mirror and looks at his reflection; he stands surprised, as if he sees it for the first time. He turns on the water, which starts falling in the sink creating a small whirlpool. His palms interrupt violently the falling of the water and then throw it on his sleepy face. This move is repeating four times and then the water is off. He takes the towel hanging beside him with his left hand and wipes his face.

 Beep-beep-beep… 07.30

He has set the alarm clock to ring for a second time in case he falls asleep again. With a quick step he goes near it and turns it off. It will not ring again, not until the next morning. With the towel in his hands he approaches the window and looks again at the grey sky. After a while, he goes into the kitchen and makes some coffee. Some hot, black coffee. A double one. He observes that the hood light is on. He does not remember doing that. The coffee begins to over boil. He turns off the gas at the right moment. With a graceful move he fills his cup and leaves the pot in the sink along with the dirty dishes. He turns off the hood light, gets the cup in his hands, sits on the lounge chair and stretches his legs on the wooden table. The coffee steams.

 Beep-beep-beep… 7.45

This should not have happened. The alarm clock should not have rung again. Something is wrong. He puts quickly his feet on the floor and goes to the clock. He takes it in the hands and turns it off. He shakes it for a while and make sure now that the alarm is off. He leaves it there. He opens the bedside drawer and gets his cigarettes. The lighter is in there too. He sits again on the chair and drinks a bit of his coffee. It is very well made. He puts a cigarette in his mouth and lights it. He likes to wake up one hour earlier to have some time to enjoy his morning coffee without any rush. He cannot understand those people going to work in the morning while still having eye gums in their eyes.

Suddenly a horrible headache hits him; like something piercing his mind. The pain is so intense that makes him drop his cigarette on the floor. Fortunately the pain does not carry on for long. He takes his cigarette quickly from the floor and puts it back in his mouth. He drinks a bit more coffee. He begins to hear a shuffling whistle, a loud frequency noise that begins to be very annoying. He covers his ears with his hands, presses them and waits for the noise to stop. Then, the whole house begins to shake and he can see the cup of coffee shaking with it. After a while, the awful whistling stops and the shaking stops as well. The whole place begins to darken. He looks around him.

Beep-beep-beep…08.00

The alarm clock rings again, against any logical explanation. He gets angry and takes it in his hands. He turns it off and leaves it back aggressively. He feels his hairs stand up like being magnetized and his skin starts having some weird moves, as if something is underneath it and pushes it outward. He feels his eyes swelling and he tries to hold them in with his hands. The TV in the living room is suddenly turned on showing snows and making a weird electronic sound of a damaged machine. The annoying frequency noise comes back and this time is much more intense and brutal. Being unable to handle the pain, he falls down on his knees and crumbles. Blood begins to pour from his eyes and ears. The cup of coffee explodes and falls in pieces all around. The window as well. Cold air enters the room and small lights of electrifying loads seem to run among all the electrical devices. While crawling on the floor covered by blood, his skin starts cracking and popping and his hairs fall on the floor. Distorted and dying, he makes a final attempt to get out of the house.

 Beep-beep-beep-beep…8.15

The alarm clock rings again, this time without having anyone to stop it.  Ceaseless.                                                                                                        He reaches the front door and opens it crawling with swollen and bloody hands and legs. He faces a mess of mangled corpses, electric shocks and crazy machines in a gusty atmosphere. He turns his look at the sky for one last time.

A huge black, unidentified flying object, hangs above New York city.
