Another in my series, "Little Known Cats Who Have Helped Humankind." I wrote these to relieve the darkness of writing my dark novel, Shadows Walking, about a Nazi doctor...

Amber, perhaps because she was a contrary cat to begin with and especially disliked her name, despised everything to do with mornings.  Most importantly, she did not like the choice of foods normally available to her for breakfast—the usual dry cat-food or canned cat-food or left-over human food which was placed in her dish between the refrigerator and the floor heating vent.  The Johannsen family insisted, no, positively begged that she eat something each morning, but Aurora was just not to be pleased.

Then, after an evening meal at a Chinese restaurant, Mrs. Johannsen decided to see whether Amber would like her breakfast food stir-fried.  She rose early the next day, noticed Amber trying to slink away, and began the sing-song cooing that the old cat quickly recognized as yet another heroic effort to get her to down what Mrs. Johannsen invariably described as "Yumyumyummies!" Amber soon realized that she was being offered another boring can of cat-food (chunky chicken livers with carrot bits) made worse by stir-frying.  She ran for the back door.  Seeing it closed, she darted down the stairs into the basement and promised herself never to come up until the family had gone to bed late that night.  To make matters worse, the smell was outrageous and spoiled the whole family’s breakfast.

Early the next day, Mrs. Johannsen, not one to be trifled with, realized that chunky chicken livers and carrot bits might be too sophisticated a taste for her beloved kitty.  She proceeded to stir-fry shredded wheat bits with raisins in a simmering chicken broth.  Amber, though, was not pleased.  Still, Mrs. Johannsen, not one to lose patience over something as important as this, tried to coax the cat into eating the concoction by tasting some herself.  To her surprise, she found shredded wheat bits with raisins stir-fried in chicken broth quite tasty.  Soon, the whole Johannsen family was hooked on the idea of stir-fried breakfast cereal.

Mr. Johannsen, hoping that his wife's idea was his meal ticket to fame and fortune, thereupon made plans to launch a fast-food franchise called “Amber’s Delight," featuring a variety of stir-fried breakfasts.  He invited his banker over for a sample to clinch the deal.  Amber squelched the plan, however, when she barfed into the wok just before the meal was served.  The banker departed hastily. As for Mr. Johannsen, he contemplated other schemes to improve his net worth.  And Amber, thanks to her determination and good taste, had saved humankind from another assault on its sensibilities.

Thoroughly enjoyable! Amber was an exceedingly wise cat and a real asset to the family, as well as to the human race.
Long may she live, live, live, live, live, live, live, live, and live!
