Part of the ever widening scandal of privatized legal/prison system. Credit ALEC for diverting our attention to issues like abortion, voting rights and food stamps while they sold the legal system to the highest bidder. It is unbelievably profitable (99.5% coming out of our tax dollars). Look for a joining of forces between the Tea Party (Ron Paul branch) and Occupy Wall Street to oppose this travesty.
I thought forfeitures were the result of criminal conviction and not probable cause. This is disgusting. I hope that these lawsuits quickly bring this practice to an end.
I have driven through Tenaha many times in my black Monte Carlo (one just like it seen being used as a drug carrier on a TV news story once) and never knew that the town practiced forfeiture, but always worried about speed traps.
