A cop shot in a bungled robbery struggles to get his life back. This is his story.

One day at a time.

One slow step at a time.

Every day it gets a little easier, but it is a long, painfully slow process.

My husband, Taylor, was shot in the head six months ago; that he is even alive is nothing short of a God-given miracle.

My husband, who is a cop for the Houston Police Department, was on call for a robbery at a residence; there was gunfire exchanged, and my husband took a direct hit to the skull.

He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors and nurses worked tirelessly to try to stabilize him and to save his life.  He was put into a medically induced coma and spent over three and a half months in the intensive care ward, fighting to live.  It was the worst moment of my life, especially when doctors informed me that Taylor had suffered irreversable brain damage.

When he came out of the coma, he was not himself.  He could not move his one side and he could not talk or move right.  It was like watching a newborn baby emerge into the world.

It took months of therapy (and more operations) to bring my husband to his current state.  He is no longer able to work, but he is coming back, slowly, but surely.  He can walk, but his left side remains paralyzed.  There is no telling whether he will ever get any movement back into that side.  He can talk, but his speech is slow, measured, garbled.  It is hard to understand him at times, especially when Taylor tries to talk fast; I'm always having to tell him to slow down so he can be understood by me and by others.

By all means, Taylor should have died in that robbery attempt.  Yet God had other plans.  He has brought Taylor through the fire and we have returned victorious.  While Taylor still faces months of therapy and possibly more surgeries on his face and head, he has come a long way.  He will be getting a governement check starting the first of the year if the governmennt decides to open back up for business.  I'm praying it does or else he (and millions of others) won't get paid.

We don't know what the future will hold for Taylor, but one thing is certain: I am putting all my trust in God and am relying on Him to get us though these uncertain, difficult days.  Just keep Taylor and my family in your prayers; we could really use them!  Thanks and God bless!

~Wendy Crockett, Taylor's wife, Houston, Texas.

I truly believe that our police and firemen/women are America's heroes. Possibly it's just because I've never had, other than an occasional traffic ticket, that I've usually deserved, but to me these people are America's heroes and it's a shame that the kids look upon those that, in the long run harm them as those they look up to as opposed to the people that can help them along in life by, in some degree, helping to install a mental compass.
I'm always amazed by your writing, my Texan friend.
