Let’s talk about water. The Earth’s surface is 70% water. The average adult human body is about 60% water. The percentage of water in an infant’s body is around 75%. The human brain is about 85% water. And even our bones are between 10 to 15% water. Every cell requires more than half of its mass in water.
Water, H2 0 , two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule combined into a substance that can be gaseous in nature, liquid, or solid depending on relative temperature. You could say it is one of the most unstable elements of this planet, and yet, without it, no living organism could ever exist. It is the most plentiful molecule on Earth. It is of critical importance, and yet has become an afterthought like so many other important aspects of life.
There is no doubt that water, uncontaminated, fresh water, was and is necessary for human life to continue unabated. In a very cosmic sense, water is a reflection of the Essence of All Things Living and Innate. This water, this life-giving substance had to be a part of that which was delivered to us through the thought or act of Creation. This would make it and all other intrinsic elements a part of something that came out of nowhere, something that had to exist in a Time before Time.
If we choose to think, to believe that Time has a crucial role in the matter of all things human, then it stands to reason that all things cosmic would have had a linear Timetable that could be counted back to a definable “beginning” or “zero hour.” Many people believe this to be the case. They would tell you that eventually we will be able to be more precise than say, the roughly one billion year window now being considered as our temporal starting point. (Current astrophysical estimates suggest that around 13-14 billion years ago a lot of something came from a sub atomic seed and within seconds scattered the elements of space, matter and anti-matter, unimaginable tons of mass, further and wider than we could ever possibly explore.)
Again, Time is a fool-hearty concept. It does not give us any real answers to any real questions. Our spiritual manifestations did not just appear magically, only to be dissolved into nothingness at the end of some great cosmic countdown. We are a part of something far more complex than this. Our so-called four dimensional thinking is a false premise.
There are components to our existence that have been purposefully disregarded, considered as meaningless or worse, as subversive. And yet, many systems of spiritual connectivity have been spoken and written of throughout the history of mankind and to this day. Although touted as superstition and folklore, these other-worldly or trans-dimensional visions are much like the purposeful fixing of glass lenses, allowing us the chance to see beyond the limits of our actual field of vision.
So, you may well ask, what does water have to do with God? Water has been used repeatedly in religious allegory to quantify God’s relationship to us. It has been categorized as a gift, a substance of sustenance and purification, proffered from wells, rivers, lakes, and seas.
Does this get us any closer to knowing how water got into the mix? No, but it does underline the fact that it must have been an important part of Creation, a part that was critical to the existence and understanding of this thing we call life.
Throughout the evolution of the planet we call Earth; water has been the physiological cornerstone of all things living. Even in the earliest stages of human development, we must have had this awareness. Nearly every documented society has had its way of embracing water, if not as a deity, as a spirit, or as a sacred element often associated with wealth, (prosperity, plenty), good health, (healing and regenerative properties), and spiritual attainment, (baptism and ritualized cleansing), to name but a few simple examples.
Water has been that one key connecting all that is living. Water moves the blood that pumps through our veins and binds us, as if by spirit, to that which created us. Water is the perfect metaphor in which to see God, the essence of All Things Living and Innate.
What does water do? In the stillness of a pond it seems to do nothing. It appears to take nothing but despite its innate quality it gives everything. At some point water is invasive, permeating, absorbing, manipulating. We now believe that primordial life, beginning with those one-celled creatures, came into existence in a heated liquid stew. We know that water molecules can be set into motion by rising temperatures, and that water can hold or retain its temperature much longer than the soil or the air. This incubating quality is like nothing else in nature. The fetus is surrounded by fluid in the womb. When our scientists examine other celestial bodies, one of the first things scouted for is the presence or absence of water.
Water not only spawned life on this planet but transported that life across millions of miles of oceans, lakes, and streams. Water, in its transient form, washed the seeds of life up and onto our shores and through rain continued the liquid life-giving connection, allowing plants to take root in the soil and animals to thrive on land. And all of this with the constant association of the light and warmth cast down by our local star.
Many suggest that this set of circumstances was and still is random and without purpose. Others insist that these things were merely incidental and have no bearing on the creation of the specific life-form known as the human being. And yet, without this precious liquid nothing “living” can be sustained. We have found no substitute for water. And without it everything dies, at least on this planet.
Water is a true reflection of God. It takes its form, solid, liquid, and gaseous virtually at will. It is ultimately self-sustaining. But it must be noted that it is only useful to us if it is treated with great care and respect.
Once we humans created Time, we began to implement the greatest curse to befall our planet. With our insatiable need to control our own destinies we lost sight of the true nature of God. We began to fixate on our ability to modify our environment, to change the world around us. Those who found themselves in positions of leadership, in the early development of civilization, most certainly solidified their roles by instructing their people on how to obtain and store water.
In the beginning all water flowed freely across the face of the Earth. Oceans and frozen ice caps were heated and thawed; moisture filled the air and clouds condensed to allow the water to fall over mountains and vast plains. The water in its liquid form etched canyons, rivers and valleys across the face of the planet. These channels were gravity driven, the water always moving down hill and always flowing back to the lowest point. Even as life forms began absorbing this perfect substance, in “death” it was returned once more to the planet. There was no waste. As in God, all things were as one and there was a perfect and natural balance.
When we humans first decided that we could control nature, we began toying with the water supply. One of the first things to be conquered was the untamed aspect of rivers and streams, quickly exploited for use in agricultural projects and in the domestication of livestock. Trade routes and eventually designated territorial borders would be contingent on the natural flow of water. As more and more humans occupied more and more space on the planet’s finite surface, water gained exponentially in importance and value.
With Time as a factor, we humans conspired to make orderly the wild. And the more we were able to dig or dredge waterways, the more humans thrived as a species. At first glance, this would seem a good thing.
It is pure arrogance that drives us to ignore the ways of nature, to use what is given in season and not to pay any attention to the natural occurrences that once directly affected our own numbers. To make men slaves to Time and then assign them to the task master denied our spiritual connection to the Creator of All That Is. These first grand social projects undoubtedly gave rise to the ego, perpetuating a feeling of God-like power to those given charge over such large-scale earth-moving, landscaping endeavors.
Over time we have purposefully drawn the water far away from most of those original river banks. We continue to suck aquifers dry. We continue to dump toxins in rivers, lakes, and oceans out of convenience. As a possession, and not as a natural resource, local sources of clean drinking water now rival caches of gold and silver in many parts of the world.
Some may weep for the many that live in regions now devoid of free-flowing clean drinking water. The reality is that nearly half the people on this planet are plagued by drought or contaminated water. If we are all a part of this Creation, will we watch in silence as our left hand withers?
Most humans have a basic understanding of the food chain. Most accept that we are dependent on plants and animals to provide us with the nutritional substances we need to stay healthy. Most of us know that this host of consumable resources also depends on the availability of water.
And yet, we are told that in “our Time” on this planet, those who labor for the greater good, those who fight for the powers that be, will be rewarded with their fair share of water and the foods that emanate from these ever shrinking watering holes. There is no God in this wisdom as those same blinded souls continue to lead the rest of us blindly through a twisted version of their Godless world. In this thinking there is no regard for the higher sanctity of life, only that of the self.
Just as the water becomes filthy and undrinkable, so too will its contaminators feel the impact. Whether you believe in something greater than yourself, or not, everything will eventually return to a molecular state, as balanced as is the rain’s journey from the cloud back to the sea.
There will come a tipping point when life will no longer be sustainable. Eventually, the planet’s surface will be swept clean again. Humans and our earthly co-inhabitants will face absolute and total extinction. But it is worth noting that despite our tampering; eventually the cycles of nature will cleanse and purify the planet once more. The laws of Creation will dictate a long slow process of filtering and recycling that will continue until that life-sustaining balance has once again been achieved.
The greed and callousness of man seems unending. Our ability to change our fate seems all but impossible. And yet, once again we are not seeing the ways of Creation. There are cycles to be discovered in everything. Patterns that, if left undisturbed will be repeated, endlessly, like the waves on the ocean. Even if we cannot lift a finger to change the way things are today, the collective essence of our best intentions can and must become as the water’s surface. It must carry our visions, our prayers, and our meditations to all corners of the planet. Even the universe must come to feel its impact.
We can not limit our imagination to a world of Time. We must not see the challenges we face as intractable, unmovable like the mountains. We must see our place in this picture as flowing, flexible, subtle, yet powerful enough to erode the mountains and the shorelines, to cut canyons deep into the Earth’s crust.
A boat at anchor cannot stay that way forever. Whether loosed by storm or consumed by rot or rust, a change in its condition is inevitable. We are the ocean, the rain, the flood, the gentile stream. In our unity with God we become one with the highest nature of all things. There will be no need for technological deliverance from our self-made disasters. There will be a seeking out of simplicity and harmony with all that we encounter. This clear liquid sparkle is meant to shine in the eyes of our children and their children’s children.
The business of allocating our existing water will be quite revealing. If water is as much symbolic as it is a real and necessary element of life, we must consider its ways. Huge and elaborate water purification and desalinization plants have been built all over the world. Dams, locks, and canals have been put in place to control who gets the water, as much as to hold and allocate it for ongoing use. Throughout the history of mankind, great cities and whole regions have blossomed and/or withered and died according to the availability and subsequent lack of water.
The presence and spiritual impact of God has similarly been predicated on our attitudes and actions. Attempts to horde water have often resulted in hostile uprisings and massive displacements of impacted peoples. Such animosity cannot and will not be quelled without a balancing out of our access to these universal resources. Similarly, our unfounded desire to quantify and control God through social edicts or religious dogma, only serves to divide people further. Some theologians may predict a God-inspired punishment for our blunders and misdeeds but out fate is inexorably connected to our own actions.
Sharing God, allowing the Essence of All Things Living and Innate, to flow naturally seems a simple vision. But for those who have established themselves by way of exerting their control over the flow of water, (or God), you can be assured will want no part of it. They will insist upon their barricades, their purposeful channeling of this most precious commodity.
Water, H2O, is just that. It is and it always will be. Those who are able look beyond the idols of intellectual superiority, narcissistic greed, and temporal control, may be able to overcome the existing imbalance. Seeing the water for what it is in its most natural state, allows us to see the Creator in a clarity that will only improve as the water becomes cleaner and clearer.
Water, and air, and the land that is our giver of life, a part and the whole of God and the Essence of All Things Living and Innate, cannot be owned, should never be bought or traded, should never be stripped of all of that which is necessary to its original, natural purpose. Rivers should be free of barriers, free to run a natural course. We must see ourselves as symbiotic creatures, giving as much as we are taking. We must respect the water’s path and go where it takes us.
The question then arises, how do we get there from here?
Every creature on this planet has a natural life cycle. Beyond this cycle are other cycles, conditions altering the arrangement of our sub-atomic connection to All That Is. Many minds have speculated as to the specific constructs of those changes but it only seems logical that, left unhindered, it will, likewise, follow a naturally occurring course. Like the mountain snow, thawing in spring to feed the vein-like tributaries, which in turn fill and often flood the banks of rivers, arteries flowing ultimately to the heart, to the sea.
Freeing the spirit to make this journey in the most natural way, would seem a worthy goal. Every connection starts with a simple awareness. Prayer and meditation cannot exist in a regimented state, a state of Time and pre-planned agendas. We are told that we can set aside Time for our prayers and meditation. But as long as we recognize Time as the absolute or the ultimate controlling factor, we are trapped within the spider’s web.
Some would say, “Repent and turn away from all things of the flesh.”
This begs the question, “Is this skin so unimportant that we should disregard it, cast it aside like dirty rags?”
The purpose of the flesh, it would seem, is the construct of a form with which to integrate into and experience the remainder of the whole. If you can push aside the façade of Time and through study or meditation, begin to comprehend the whole over its parts, you would peacefully and purposefully become a part of it. You would better understand the God-like nature which is as physically present as water. You would begin to feel the urge to become more balanced within this spiritual community. Eventually, those who persevere begin to let go of the unnatural behaviors we have been taught or have somehow become comfortable with in our lives. Wisdom would then be coupled with a greater understanding and appreciation of being one with God; being one with All That Is.
I would advocate that there is a chance, a good chance, that the human race might alter its current self-destructive bent. There is no shortage of animosity towards those who see sharing and a communal approach to life as being paramount. This is the dam building of the keepers of Time. In the end, the water will prevail. There is no need for violence, but water is known for its constant pressure, for its resilience. Similarly, the more people who refuse to perpetuate corrupt and self-serving life-styles, who begin to purposefully teach their children the ways of all things natural, the more others will feel the groundswell, and such ideas will herald change.
Part of our Age of Enlightenment was the voyages of the many ships, many circumnavigating the globe for the very first time. So many discoveries made possible by our understanding of and ability to make use of the water that covers so much of our planet’s surface.
Electrical impulses flow through water like unseen waves. The energy of an electrical impulse can boil water, melt ice, and create steam. The Essence of All Things Living and Innate, “God” can flow through us in this same way. This “Holy Spirit” or “Higher Energy” is able to change the very nature of our being. However, just like the obstacles on the out side of us, we can, and do, throw up our own log-jams and sandbars on the inside, as well.
Remember the water; the purification, the sanctification, and the connection that centers on balance.

This article in the stories section I find it be both profound and enlightening. Using water as a metaphor for human existence, you have clearly pointed out what is wrong with society today. Essentially it is what has been wrong with society all along because we live by a "territorial imperative" from our animal origins that results in waste, hoarding, and greed. This entire process that some have called "the matrix," has locked us in a destructive cycle that will only lead to our demise if we do not change and emulate the cycle of life that nature has already provided for us where everything is naturally renewed.
Change is the fundamental mover and we must change if we are to survive.
