THE MALTESE FALCON opera lyrics

I AM I song lyric
[sung by Brigid O'Shaughnessy]

You may call me Miss Wonderly
and I guess that you wonder
am I just what I seem
or am I some kind of a dream?

maybe no maybe yes
you just take your best guess

when I walk
you have to wonder
when I talk
I make men blunder
when I smile
a distant thunder
when I spell
a man gets dumber

for a word or a price
I can be so very nice

I am I
I am I
who am I
to say
I am I
I am I
I am I
anyway
you can call me Miss Wonderly
miss up and under-ly
that's what my name is today

YOU GOT BRAINS song lyrics
[sung by Sam Spade]

You got brains, yes you have, you got brains.
You'll play hell with the girl, yes you will.
Then she'll lead you around
by the nose like a hound
and will leave you in jail for your pains.

You're a smart guy, you are, you're a whiz.
You know every mistake in the quiz.
But you fall for a dame
and then leave me the blame.
You may be the smartest guy in the biz.

When we hooked up before
and put our names on the door
I thought I could trust you with my life.
But that was a long
time ago don't you're know
before I caught the eye of your wife.

You got brains, yes you have, you got brains.
But you don't know what seems oh so plain.
A detective, it seems,
ought to know real from dreams.
I shouldn't have to explain it again.

WHO KILLED FLOYD THURSBY? song lyrics
[sung by Sam Spade]

Who killed Floyd Thursby?
I guess Thursby had to die.
Somebody had to kill him,
although I don't know why,

but somebody killed Thursby.
Somebody did try.
Now Thursby's dead as Jesus.
Thursby had to die.

Thursby was no amateur.
Thursby was no saint.
He didn't go to work for fun.
He wasn't what he aint.

He died with gun still tucked inside
his coat was never opened,
and now he's lying in a ditch,
full of lead and broken.

Who killed Floyd Thursby?
I guess Thursby had to die.
Somebody had to kill him,
although I don't know why,

but somebody killed Thursby.
Somebody did try.
Now Thursby's dead as Jesus.
Thursby had to die.

I KNOW WHERE I STAND NOW song lyrics
[sung by Sam Spade]

I know where I stand now
I know where I'm at
you think I am cornered
like some kind of rat

you think I killed Thursby
on more than a dare
but I tell you brothers
I just didn't care

although the man was
a partner to me
his ethics were suspect
his morals were free

but he was my partner
and so you put down
you think that I murdered him
put him in the ground

but that doesn't work
with the Thursby killing
and this is the conundrum
that you find so thrilling

it breaks down under logic
when you realize
that I couldn't do it
so believe your eyes

I'm sorry I got up
up on my hind legs
but you birds would work me
try to make me beg

and you cracking foxy
made me nervous I guess
but let me pour the drinks
you have to say yes

I know where I stand now
I know where you're at
you aint proving nothing
and that, friends, is that

A SQUARE DEAL song lyrics
[sung by Lt. Dundy]

now we've asked
what we came to ask
and we took
we took you to task

but you sealed
you sealed the deal
you're slippery
as an eel

we told you
more than you told us
you don't trust us
but I guess that's fair enough

it's our job
it's what we gotta do
gotta put
put the screws on you

but you know me
yes you know me Spade
if you did it
I can't give you a fade

and if you didn't
well that's our mistake
either way you know me
you'll get most of the breaks

it's a fair deal we're offering
if you come across and every word is true
a square deal you can't ask for more
and if not then we're out the door

[Spade]:
I'd feel better about it
if you drink your drink
I'm not as smart
not as you think
but not dumb
I aint no one's fool
even though
you think I play it cool

[Dundy]:
a fair deal that we're offering
if you come across and every word is true
a square deal you can't ask for more
and if not then we're out the door
Good night

DID YOU KILL MY HUSBAND song lyrics
[sung by Sam Spade and Effie Archer]

[sung by Effie Archer]:
Oh Sam I stayed away,
away long as I could.
But I couldn't wait
No matter that I should.
Now I've just got to know
although it is a sin,
did you kill my husband?
Did you do him in?

[sung by Sam Spade]:
Ha ha ha!
'You killed my husband, Sam!
Please be kind to me!'
Jesus Christ little girl!
What must you think of me!
What kind of man
you think I am
to kill my partner just for you?
I may be not the best
but even you must guess
that's something that I'd never do.
Who put that bright idea
inside your head?
And where were you the moment
he fell dead?
No, you should not have come here precious
it just wasn't wise.
Now dry you tears and go back home.
Don't give me no surprise.

'Did you kill my husband?'
O Lord, damn your eyes!

MY LITTLE ANGEL song lyrics
[sung by Sam Spade]

you're an angel
a nice little rattle-brained angel
oh Effie my dear you must
know that you're the only soul in this world I trust
but your reasoning dear is a bust
but you're an angel

oh Effie my dear you're an angel
a nice little rattle-brained angel
I wish I had never met Ida
never taken her out for a ride-a
never seen what there was there in inside her
my little angel

it's so funny with women and men
and it's played out again and again
I never know what to say
to women except in that way
but despite what goes on in between dear
I wish that I never had seen her
you're the only one who's ever faithful
my little angel

YOU'RE TOO SLICK FOR YOUR OWN GOOD song lyrics
[sung by Effie Perrine]

you're too slick for your own good
you think you know what you should
you always think you know what you're doing
but you're making it up while pursuing
every angle and finding the clue-ing
but oblivious to miscontruing
you're too slick for your own good

you worry me, you do
you think you know what's true
but some day you're going to find out
what breaking your heart is about
and when you finally do
it won't be what you thought you knew

you're too slick for your own good
I'll do what I can if I could
but look at me Sam and say
that you'll do what you want anyway
and even if you understood
you're too slick for your own good

I'VE BEEN BAD song lyrics
[sung by Brigid O'Shaughnessy]

I haven't lived a good life...

I've been bad
worse than you could know
but I'm not all bad
look at me and you know it's so

you know I'm not all bad, don't you?
You can see all that, can't you?
Then you trust me a bit, won't you?
can't you masquerade?

I've been bad
I've been bad
I've been bad bad bad
but that was the life I had

Mr. Spade, Mr. Spade, Mr. Spade
Oh, I'm so alone and afraid
and I've got no one to help me
and you're so strong and brave

I know I've no right
to ask you to trust me
and if in the night
you'll know that it must be

I know I've been bad
I've been bad
I've been bad bad bad
but that was the life I had

I trust you with my life
but so much I can't tell you
I can't tell you now
or my enemies kill you

later I will if I can
you're such a resourceful man
You can help me you can save me
be generous Mr. Spade....

YOU'RE GOOD song lyrics
[sung by Sam Spade and Brigid O'Shaughnessy]

You're good,
you're very good.
You won't need much
much of anybody's help.

You're good,
so very good.
You got the stuff,
don't need anybody else.

It's chiefly in your eyes I think,
that throb that's in your voice,
and once you get it going think
a man can have no choice.
He's putty in your hands,
he has to do as you command.
No matter what he should
because you're good, you're very good

It’s chiefly in the way you say
"Be generous, Mr. Spade"

[sung by Brigid O'Shaughnessy]:
I deserve that, I deserve it, yes I do, but - oh!
I did want your help so much.
I need it don't you know?
The lie was in the way I said it
not at all in what I said, it
is my own fault
that you can't
can't believe me now.

[sung by Sam Spade]:
Now you really are dangerous,
dangerous and how
You almost got me where you want me
but I can't allow
you to throw me such a curve you see
or under the nearest bus
cause now you are really and truly
very dangerous

WHO WAS FLOYD THURSBY? song lyrics

[sung by Brigid O'Shaughnessy and Sam Spade]

[sung by Sam Spade]:
Who was Floyd Thursby?
And who was he to you?
Is there anything you can tell me
that I can take as true ?
I'm afraid I won't be much help to you
unless I know what it's all about.
But everything you've told me,
every lie leaves me it doubt.
I can not find the proof
unless you speak the truth.

[sung by Brigid O'Shaughnessy]:
I met him in the Orient:
in Hong Kong late last week.
He promised he could help me,
but he lies with every word he speaks.
He took advantage of me,
only to then betray me
and now he wants to stay me.
That's part of his techniques.
His story was that he came East
to be a bodyguard
to some slick gambler who had left
the States because of crooked cards.
The gambler won a deal of wealth
and then he disappeared.
Was Thursby there to deal out death?
He was a man to fear.
He never went to sleep without
boobytrapping his room.
He lived in constant nervousness,
an ever present doom.

[Sung by Sam Spade]:
You picked a nice sort of playmate.

THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF song lyrics
[sung by Sam Spade]

the world is not enough
the girl is not enough
and love itself is not enough
a man must seek much more
something down at the core
else what's a heaven for
except to bluff

unless you have the stuff
the stuff that dreams
that dreams
are made of

we're meant to fight and strive
whether we win or dive
it's what keeps us alive
though times are rough
but when you reach the end
and you've lost all your friends
hard to get up again
you're not so tough

unless you have the stuff
the stuff that dreams
that dreams
are made of

the stuff that dreams are made of
as nebulous as smoke
the stuff that dreams are made of
it aint no fucking joke
when everything goes stale
and all your hope has failed
all gone with just a puff
then all that's left
all that's left
all that's left
is the stuff
the stuff
that dreams
are made
of

DOWN THESE MEAN STREETS
[based on an essay by Raymond Chandler]

[sung by the chorus]:

in everything of art and life
there is redemption in our strife
it may be pity or irony
it may be laughter it may be me

and if there is of such a man
he'll be the hero if he can
a common man but still complete
not live on his knees but die on his feet

but down these mean streets a man must go
who is not mean or stained or afraid
down these mean streets a man must go
to save what there is left to be saved

a man of honor alive or dead
without a thought need not be said
the best man in the underworld
a gun a grip mother of pearl

though he is poor, in spirit rich
knows truth and lie and which is which
a lonely man but he is proud
a voice of steel but not too loud

but down these mean streets a man must go
who is not mean or stained or afraid
down these mean streets a man must go
to save what there is left to be saved

if thus there be go mark him well
and of his story we must tell
for brave men are few and far in between
and things are not what they could have been

and when you find a man to believe
then for the rest you can only grieve
for life is just a endless parade
and heroes are born, are born and not made

down these mean streets a man must go
who is not mean or stained or afraid
down these mean streets a man must go
to save what there is left to be saved

An epic work! You've paid a fine tribute to the noir film, "The Maltese Falcon." Your last verse says it all.

Thank you, Ron.

This is less than half finished....

It's been a long time since I've seen the Maltese Falcon and I remember very little except Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre.

This seems to be a tour de force in lyric writing that must've taken a great deal of time and thinking to write. I often think of The Who's classic opera, Tommy. I could easily see these lyrics put to song for the stage in an adaptation of the movie (novel?).
