THE MALTESE FALCON opera Part II

THIS IS HOPELESS
[sung by Sam Spade and Brigid O'Shaughnessy]

SS: this is hopeless
I don't know what you want done
this is hopeless
I'm just a man with a gun

BS: Will you go to the police ?

SS: I just got to stand still
and they'll be all over me
like ants on a hill
you'll just have to take your chances
with your song and your dances

BS: You've been patient with me
and I know you've tried to help me
it's useless I suppose
I guess that's how it goes

SS: this is hopeless
I don't know what you want done
this is hopeless
I'm just a man with a gun

SS: How much money have you got?
give it here, I'll take it all
Can you get any more?
Don't squall

BS: I got jewelry and some furs

SS: You hock them, that's the word
I'll be back soon as I can
don't open up the door to any man
I'll ring four times let me in
and maybe then begin again

MEET MR. CAIRO song lyrics

[sung by Joel Cairo and Sam Spade]

Effie: Gardenia!

SS: Quick darling, let him in !
Will you come in Mr. Cairo?
Will you sit down Mr. Cairo?
What can I do Mr. Cairo?
Just tell me, let me know.

JC: May I offer my condolences
on your late partner's death
it was oh so so unfortunate
whew! Let me catch my breath!
is there as the news implies
if I might wonder why
and if there was a relationship between
this and the death of that Mr. Thursby?
I beg your pardon...

SS: No.
Why do you want to know?

JC: more than idle curiosity
prompts my question plain
do me the small courtesy
allow me to explain
I'm trying to recover
an ornament mislaid
I was hoping you'd assist me
and as you say
no questions will be asked
no questions will be asked
you'll be more than amply paid
if you take up this task
the ornament's a statuette
a figure of a bird
help me please to find this thing
tell me what you've heard

SS: Goodnight Effie....

JC: you will clasp your hands together
at the back of your head
I intend to search your office Mr Spade

SS: Go ahead. Go ahead and search
I'm not afraid

[whop!]

JC: Look what you did to my shirt!
Look what you did to my nose!
Surely it's certain to you
how much I spend on my clothes!

SS: Imagine my embarrassment
at discovering your offer
was just a bunch of hooey

JC: I have money in my coffer
My offer is most genuine
I am prepared to pay
a princely sum that is not mine
believe me when I say
Do you have it?

SS: No.

JC: But if it isn't here
why did you risk your life ?
Do you not hold it dear?

SS: Why should I let
people come in here
and stick me up?

JC: Certainly I should try to save
the owner half the cut.

SS: Who is he?

JC: Mr Spade
forgive me if I won't
answer such a question at this stage.
I don't know you, no I don't

SS: I think it would be better
with all our cards on the table

JC: I do not think so
for if you know
more than I was able
then you shall profit from my knowledge
as I have explained, sir

SS: Well, if I work for you
then I'll need a retainer

JC: You will take say 200

SS: No, I'll take it all.
Thank you. That was fun.

JC: May I please have back my gun?
You will put your hands
up against the wall
I intend to search your office

SS: Sure go ahead go ahead I won't stop you.
Go ahead go ahead go ahead

I'VE BEEN BAD
[sung by Brigid O'Shaughnessy and Sam Spade]

SS: you're not the sort of personn
that you pretend to be
are you?

BS: I don't know what you mean

SS: Don't pull that act on me
the blushing schoolgirl manner
the counterfeited stammer
the wayward pollyanna
it's really just too much

BS: I haven't lived a good life
I've been bad I've been bad
very very bad

SS: Well, don't brag about it

BS: you couldn't know the troubles I have had
I'm worse than you could know
and if you knew me you would go
and you would go away mad
I've been bad

SS: Well that's good
because if you were you see
then we'd get nowhere
simply nowhere

BS: I won't be innocent.

SS: I know. Believe me, I know.

BS: Bad

SS: By the way, I saw Joel Cairo earlier tonight

BS: Do you know him?

SS: Only slightly.

BS: Hmmmm.....

SS: Oh you're good, you're very good.

BS: What did he say about me?
Tell me if you would

SS: Nothing simply nothing

BS: What did you talk of then?

SS: He offered me money for the black bird
and offered to be friends

BS: What did you say what did you say?

SS: I said it was a lot of dough to me

BS: It's more than I could offer
to buy your loyalty

SS: Oh that's RICH ! Oh that's rich!
That's rich coming from you
what have you ever offered me
but money ???
have you took my in your confidence
or told a word of truth?
you've tried to buy my loyalty
with money, beauty, youth

BS: What else is there to offer?
What can I buy you with?

SS: I don't care what your secrets are
you can't buy me with a kiss
but I can not go ahead
unless you have more trust in me
I have to know what this is about
you have to try convincing me
that you're not just hoping it will be
all worked out at the end.
you've got to give me something stronger.

BS: can't you put your faith in me a little longer?

SS: How much is a little?
What are you waiting for???

BS: I'm waiting one more day to see
what lies behind the door....

SS: you don't have to trust me
you don't have to trust me
plain as it can be
long as you persuade me to trust you

SS: because you don't know me
you don't know me
beyond what you can see
but I can see through you

SS: but I know where I stand
I know where I stand
and as long as I can
we will stick to the plan

SS: cause you don't have to trust me
you don't have to trust me
but if you want to stay free
you must persuade me
to trust you

And so it continues… The plot grows thicker. It's been a long time since I've seen anything with Sam Spade in it. Good work… Keep it up.
