The craft of writing is similar to any skill. Requirements only vary by the objectives utilized. Writing can be natural or more like a desire. Any career requires paying dues and finding a master is a kin to OJT [On the Job Training]. Every writer has a technique to master his or her craft. Every vocation has countless variables as part of the mix. The field in common sense is unlimited, some time it is luck, working hard, having the right connections, and politics round out the key factors.
Many own up, write, write, and read, read with that discipline to continue regardless of consequences, so you round out the field. So what makes a writer successful is it based on volume of sales, pride of accomplishment or one perfect master piece. For me it’s like wining lotto, one in a million, but if you don’t play you can never win. Writing follows the same rule, if you don’t write you will not succeed in seeing your work in print. But getting published is similar to only getting three numbers that is low payback as to financial rewards. Four numbers brings up to selling our books. Than if you get five numbers you are well over the norm, but there can be one shot of hitting the big one that could more then one winner. But the love of writing negates it all, because that is controlled by the editors, publishers, and agents.
The difference between gambling and the creativity of writing is learning to adjust and change accordingly by the skills and attended during the process of learning your craft. When you first place words into the computer or on a blank page, it starts. You become captured by the skillfulness it is all consuming and driven within the psyche of being creative.
Everyday is a new opportunity to excel. With it, comes joy and disappointment, the gratification over rides the downside of every career. It takes time with a certain commitment that is like love. Many things have been written about both, but once you know what you feel, you are on your way toward happiness. With love you give and take, with it you blossom into a happy couple regardless of what stands in your way. Writing has the same format you change and adjust accordingly to what the market will accept. Teaming within this concept is the ever on going transition. Having ideas are like leaves in a tree, they are endless until the fall winds and winter season. Most but not always is a tree bare of leaves. Some remain not necessarily green but still a leaf.
Writing goes through sillier transitions, at times you run into certain roadblocks, my attitude regarding this is just another opportunity to move forward. Looking back at times helps you to move ahead. Like it has been said, you are your own worst enemy, but at the same time your best friend.
Many years have passed and I still feel like I have never started in what has been my passion in crafting words that can stand by themselves at the same time to be proud of that accomplishment. Passing query letters from publishers and agents have surpassed all explanations. Each has a meaning, few if any responded, but that is an answer to be hold.
Questioning your resolve for the next letter and you keep directing your craft into new directions. During the writing process that can consume most of your time, yet you feel like it is the only method, but what can be missed is what had gained the upper hand in the publishing world. Having ideas has never been an issue. My thoughts will be out like live to me; it is based on the concept that I will never be able to put those dreams into writing. They come without effort, so the written word in writing is the easy part. Making them, work for the ultimate prize becomes the challenge.
Self editing is a difficult task, but at the same time rewarding. Examples are bountiful based on many years of inputs. Publishers and agents always have a unique approach to the others written world. They are driven to a profit and at the same time miss the written objectives. Case in point, I had used the inputs from these sources and while changing the novels did not meet the next reviewer. After many of these interactions I stopped, put my novel to rest. After few months, I picked it up and quickly realized what I had followed or let to believe what was correct and the direction left me shocked.
Reading all the changes, I had lost my voice and the many months of changes became lost in the spirit of what I had worked on for years. My decision was straight forward; I deleted all, started with my original, and began self editing that made it comfortable with. There is never a perfect solution because every person has his or her has it own. When the day ends thank your faith, because when you wake in the morning, a new beginning will drive your words into that clear, cloudy, stormy, or bright sun shine of the day. This is what makes you different and believing in yourself is the biggest reward you can give to others. So never, let your dreams fall into the clouds of confusion. Success is with your reach by never giving into failure. Keep writing, reading and writing. Like it has been said, you are your own worst enemy, but at the same time your best friend.
