A visit from extraterrestrials does not have to be alien and destructive like described by so many science fiction stories and predicted by scientific geniuses like Stephen Hawking.

NASA and NORAD were greatly concerned when they suddenly found a very large object moving at a speed far exceeding any known asteroid or comet moving between the earth and the moon. It was even viewed moving across the moon although many amateur moon watchers and lovers were unable to catch it with their smart phones the shadow came and went so fast--with the blink of an eye. Some even wondered if it was real at all since it disappeared so completely.

But not without leaving a message. It just happened that I was sleeping my usual interrupted sleep unable to fend for myself in my paralyzed body when, outside my window in my small backyard, there was a brief, but brilliant, flash of blue light.

My caregiver was asleep and didn't hear or see it. I only sensed it in my mind and woke up just to experience the flash without any sound. As if by magic, I rose from my bed, naked, and moved to the kitchen without any pain or knowledge that I couldn't walk and pulled back the sliding door to enter the warm, unconditioned summer night air that I cherish so much to see a small clear glass ball with an eerie blue light inside resting calmly on my stiff green St. Augustine with hardly a dimple.

Drawn to this crystal ball that lit up my entire backyard, I had no qualms. I merely left the rough treated wood decking for the cushy carpet of green lawn, feeling those welcome sensations on my bare feet that I hadn't felt in so long and reached down to pick up this wondrous piece of billiard ball sized artifact one would find in a curio shop except for the cool blue light it was emitting without any visible power source.

Upon picking the lighter than glass ball up and feeling its cold, hard exterior like a feather, my mind was drawn to the dancing light inside and it spoke to me the words, "I am the power and the light. Give freely of me to others. To duplicate me, just say, 'Duplicate please,' and I will reproduce at your will."

I didn't know what that meant until I tried it out. I just said to the ball, "Duplicate please." And then, as if by magic another crystal ball exactly the same appeared out of thin air and I held one in each hand. So I tucked them both under my arm and reentered the house. Lights came on wherever I went even if I hadn't turned them on. So did fans in my dining and living room and the air conditioning. In order for me to change fan speed or turn them on or off, all I had to do was think it without acting and my desires were granted… Very strange indeed!

I went back to bed feeling like I never had before, even before my paralysis, not sure what I would tell my caregiver, Crystal. I was quite sure that I would no longer need her and not sure how to tell her. Still, I couldn't get back to sleep wanting to share what I had found with others, including Crystal.

When Crystal awoke at 6 am, her appointed time to give me a pill and get me up because I couldn't, I surprised her by sitting up and sitting on the side of the bed watching her awake.

While Crystal was uttering, "What happened?… I can't believe…" I reached under the covers where I had placed the two crystal balls and handed her one of them. She took it in her hand and stared at it like I had before. I sensed that she got the same message I did, although I didn't hear it like she did in her inner ear. She smiled and turned toward me.

"Lon, my backache is gone. And look at you! For some reason I have the feeling that you won't need me anymore. But, I do hope that you will keep in touch. I've invested so much of my life in you. Don't be a stranger. But… No regrets. It's wonderful to see you totally independent again like you were before… Amazing. Can I get you breakfast? It's the least I can do.

"Take your crystal ball with you, Crystal. I think you'll enjoy how it will help you make me some eggs. I feel like doubling up. Make twice my usual fried egg order. I know I'm going to burn it off with activity. This place could use a man around the house to fix a few things." I laughed and Crystal got my point. I still couldn't wait to get out and see my neighbors… Something I hadn't done in 20 years or more.

I got dressed by myself for the first time in a very long time and left the house, ringing the doorbells and knocking on doors like some unwanted evangelistic holy proselytizer or foot-in-the-door salesman. Still, when my neighbors saw the eerie blue light in my hand they came and accepted a duplicate without question. They were also amazed at seeing my sudden "cure," having only seen me in my wheelchair before.

Having covered the entire block on both sides, I got the bright idea of heading to the nearest shopping center where I would be able to spread the good news to many more people. Jogging on over to the shopping center, handing out magic crystals along the way to anyone that I passed, I positioned myself outside a grocery store and started handing out many more.

I returned to my house, noticing that I saw others on the street that already had a crystal ball, some with them being carried in ingenious ways from shoulder or hip by means of a mesh bag or clear plastic bag.

While making myself lunch for the first time practically ever, I turned on the television and all they could talk about was how these mysterious crystal balls were being spread everywhere and what miracles they were performing.

The crystal balls had apparently rained down on many parts of the world, largely landing near the homes of the most needy and disabled, like me. All coming from that mysterious spaceship that came through so fast it was barely detected by the best surveillance the world had. Nowhere in sight, the only evidence that it was here, on earth, were the miraculous power sources packed into billiard size, featherlight crystal balls emitting a mysterious, but extremely powerful, blue light.

The religious were praying thankfully for what they thought was a visit from God. The rest of us were just thankful and most willing to share our good fortune with others.

And it was truly amazing. When people drove their cars with their crystal balls, the gas tanks never emptied. They could disconnect their batteries and all of the cars' systems, including starting still worked. Even massive vessels like ocean liners and cargo ships no longer needed fuel to operate.

The aging and costly to maintain electrical grid that spanned most of the earth was turned off. Manufacturing facilities and large buildings saw zero consumption at their meters. Water everywhere was found to be crystal clear and didn't need purifying. Food no longer turned rotten or was attacked by insects or bacteria. Still, the insects and bacteria had food and prospered. It was a miracle that wasn't a miracle.

Power plants were shut down. Most of all, nuclear power plants. The grid was no longer necessary because everyone who wanted one had a magic power source that they carried with them.

Unlike the myths of the earth and people since time immemorial, this story had no downside, no hidden moral or catch. Everyone benefited; made free of injury, disease and given eternal life, if they wanted it.

Power to the people took on a whole new meaning as everyone began realizing their wildest dreams. Trips were being planned to visit the solar system within weeks. There seemed to be no limit to human potential with their individual power and light.

Terrific notion, perhaps a dream ... some magic like photo-synthesis or imagination.

A truly uplifting story. Love the possibility of a universal "big brother" watching and helping. Could be from the hand of "God". We surely could use whatever help, in whatever form it comes.

I found this a riveting write, Ron. Maybe what heaven would be-all upside and no downside. I think the sharing of the great fortune was the moral, though, so all would have the magic, not just the lucky ones who obtained the crystal ball. I enjoyed the story and your telling of it.

Feeling a bit depressed lately (gee I wonder why?), I enjoyed your story. Fun to imagine a happy world with no problems or threats.

IT's interesting the effect this story had on me. On one hand I was sighing and thinking, "O how I wish!" while on the other was the more cynical side of my nature saying, "Yeah, right..." But, you know, the dreamer and wishmaker was the stronger of the two. There is always hope, no matter what the pessimists may say. And who's to say the Savior won't be from another world? Hadn't S/He always been? Something to think about...when we step beyond our hubris in believing we humans are the be all of the universe.

Ron ... Aah ... Utopia !

I am reminded of the cute lil Shmoos in Little Abner.
They became anything you wanted.
Self gratification ...
Also, Aladdin's Lamp with the Genie, and three wishes.
And let us not soon forget the Magic Wands of Harry Potter...
Aliens, Aliens... wherefore art thou, Aliens?
😜👍🏻😻

I enjoyed this story so much! Wouldn't it be cool if aliens recognized our plight and gave such a gift!

Love ya!

If only we as individuals and collective bodies would put our insights to good use so all of mankind could benefit.

I enjoyed your imaginative magical story.

Eh . . . Power to the "crystal ball." Be happy when I get mine. Just think, no more jobs at power plants, and nuclear power plants" and all because the people had everything they needed or wanted without having to work for it. What a wonderful, magical story! Worldwide happiness that gave people everything they wanted. Soon there were no jobs at all. Why would there be jobs? The "crystal ball" is still in play today, it is called governmental assistance.
