That moment you realize you love someone you didn't think you would.
He smiles shyly with hope in his eyes. His story of triumph coming to a close, he waits for acknowledgement, pride, or jealousy. It doesn’t matter. The attention is all he truly wants. His eyes look up and meet his audience. His breath catches in his throat, stumbling over his next rehearsed line, doubting the wit of it now. He quickly looks away, but is immediately drawn back, waiting for a reply.
A gentle smile matches his own pensive one. Laugh lines break the symmetry of the lips he is focused on, and the eyes he stares into shine with pride, and something else he can’t identify. He lets out the breath he is holding, but does not relax, His heart beats faster of its own accord and his words stumble over his lips.
A gentle calloused hand grips his own forcing him to focus his thoughts. He blushes deeply as his teeth click together in silence. His confusion bleeds into anticipation, but with no direction, no map to follow.
His fingers trace the line of grey visible in his sight. He thinks about what he will look like when he starts to go grey.
A deep chuckle punctuates his though and his hand returns to his lap, chastised. There is time for those thoughts in the future.
He looks up again and sees what he has been waiting for. He is not alone.
It is interesting that, while most of us find the physical attraction of someone new quite exciting and may find it difficult to approach them in what is generally called, "love at first sight," it is only when written that we become literary and write for a Pulitzer Prize rather than the reality of the situation. ;-)
