Human nature destines us to develop quirks I’m afraid. Some of us may be mouthy, while some are quiet, some productive, and some are procrastinators and etc. I often wonder what possesses those who have a penchant for starting a project/job and then walking away from it, never finishing it. Is it a sign of ADD/ADHD, as some professional analysts advocate? Is it because some, as it is proclaimed the builder of the Queen Anne Style Victorian mansion, The Winchester House, Sarah Winchester, in San Jose California believed, that once the project is complete their existence on earth will end, as though their purpose on earth has come to an end with its conclusion as well? What is it that causes those individuals to lose interest in something they so diligently pursued to a point before walking away from it? Is it merely boredom with the task, or is it something much deeper? I’m not talking about the dishes left undone, or the laundry left still wet in the washer for a day or two waiting for the dryer. I’m talking about projects as extensively involved as remodeling a room, tearing out kitchen cupboards and etc. that might never find its completion, or wait a decade before the interest in the project is picked up again and possibly concluded. When living with someone who displays such penchants, one develops a devil may care attitude where the jobs left undone are tolerated as a part of life, as long as life can go on with few road blocks to slow its progress. Such as using the guest bathroom and shower for three to five years while the master bathroom remodel is in progress, or cooking in the RV for seven months before a stove and counters are finished to the point of being useful in an incomplete kitchen remodel, that might take three or more years of living with debris, sawdust, 2 x 4s, and no cupboards or storage, while the contents from missing cupboards reside in cardboard boxes stacked about the other rooms of the house. You get to the point to where nothing wrangles up your hackles. You merely learn to take things with a grain of salt. Life is just too short to waste it being irritated by the things you have no control over, and you definitely have no control over another individual and what they do! My analogy is to just learn to live with it, learn to adapt, chuckling at what life hands you. It could be worse. You could be cooking over a fire, stirring dinner in a tin can under a bridge somewhere.
This article, not story, speaks to the procrastinators of this world. I believe there's a difference between procrastinators who may eventually get to the task and finish it and those that start things without any intention of ever finishing. They are the messiest of all.
Probably the most damaging are those that don't finish school. Followed by those who have expensive projects (build a boat, start a business, frame off renovation of a car, etc.) and then never finish, leaving the mess for someone else to complete or junk.
I personally have books that I have started and probably won't complete. But, anything physical that I have set out to do, I have completed in record time in my life. My doctorate, design and build a house, learn how to make a website, and many other projects.
