At the request of readers, I am serializing a novel based on my short story, Last Man Standing. This is a draft, so your comments are appreciated.

Genesis Conceived

As soon as we stepped out the door Lisa turned around and said, "Just a minute." She turned and went back inside and began rummaging among the unclaimed laundry left on the table at one end of the laundromat. She came up with a brown floppy hat and set it on her head. It fit her perfectly like it was hers--maybe it was?

Soon, we were back on the street and Lisa was reminiscing about how she used to leave every morning, regardless of the weather, and walk the four blocks to her grade school. And then, in seventh grade, it was nearly a half mile walk to the new junior high school. "I miss school. I miss my friends. Some of them came around in the beginning. But they either left town or didn't come back after it got bad."

I had to change the subject. "See, that's my red truck on the left there, two blocks away. You should've seen it in the showroom last year when I found it all shiny and brand-new. I'm afraid that baby's seen a lot of road and is not as pretty as it once was. Just yesterday, it got pounded by hail the size of baseballs and now the hood is all dented. Don't know whether I can replace it or not. The way things are, even though the engine still runs fairly well, I'll probably have to abandon that truck for something else… But until I do, you can take a ride in it with me! Maybe even drive!"

"Wow! That sounds like fun. But drive? That would be too hard, wouldn't it?"

"You're 16, aren't you? Most kids your age are just dying to drive, and do, unless their parents don't want them to. And, that baby is easy to drive… Power steering, brakes and an automatic transmission. Just like a car only easier because you can see better. With the trailer it's a little harder; I'll unhook that trailer to teach you."

"I don't know. My dad never had a car. We never left town. We did take the bus one time to Galveston and the beach, but dad got worried about grandpa and the laundromat and we came back after only staying there three days. All I remember was that the water and beach were dirty. There were all these jellyfish on the beach they told us not to touch and stinking seaweed. And they told us not to go some places because of the riptide. I didn't know what that was but they said it was dangerous and would take us out to sea. I got a terrible sunburn."

"There's no beach now in Galveston. The island's probably underwater. I think the ocean has risen 5 or 6 feet. But last year, there was a beach in Southern California."

"How do you know there's no beach in Galveston?”

"I drove through there a month ago. Couldn't get to the beach anywhere. Most of the cities along the Gulf Coast are flooded." I lied a bit, but probably wasn't wrong.

"So there's more than all the people dying and disappearing?"

"A lot more. A lot more than that I'm afraid. Sorry to disappoint you. But that's what I'm seeing." I thought about changing the subject again.

"That's scary." Lisa grabbed my hand.

"Yeah, scary." I squeezed her hand.

We had arrived at the truck and I had her climb up into the driver's seat to get a feel for it. A big smile came across her face as she wiggled the wheel back and forth occupying only a small portion of that big seat with its command of the road. "Wow!" She exclaimed. "I think this will be fun to drive! But it's so big!"

I chuckled. "Don't worry. You will be an over the road trucker before you know it. Turn around and you can crawl into the sleeper."

All I could hear her saying as I followed her into the sleeper was "Wow… Wow… Wow… Cool." It sounded like she had hit the jackpot. Her eyes were big as saucers. "You sleep here all the time? You've got a microwave and refrigerator… coffeemaker… everything! This is really cool. Really cool."

"My home away from home. You can sleep here if you want. It's even got air conditioning on these hot nights."

"Air conditioning? Cool."

We left the truck and walked the streets with Lisa helping me get a lay of the land. Many of the buildings had burned except for those masonry buildings like the hotel, the laundry and her two schools. But the schools were wrecked by vandalism and it made her cry to see them in such bad shape. Everywhere that there had been bare ground, young grass was growing, already two feet tall and there were wildflowers among the grass. Even some seedling trees. By the schools and by the library, we found virgin ground that probably would be good for gardens. I suggested that we start digging the next day. Lisa agreed.

By the time we had checked out everything, including a hardware store to see if we could find a rototiller. We didn't, but found some shovels and rakes that we carried back to the likely garden spots and left for the next day. By that time, we were getting very hot and thirsty, so we stopped off at the truck for a cool drink and I gathered some food that we would prepare for our evening meal back at Lisa's home. I just happened to have a bottle of wine that I had picked up and took that with us, too.

"Are you old enough to drink wine?" I asked slyly…

"After dad died last year, I found his store of liquor… and drank the whole thing." Lisa's confession had effectively answered my question. "I got real sick, too." She laughed.

We were soon back at the small kitchenette. But Lisa suggested that we go upstairs to the second floor kitchen where there was more room. We shared cooking the food and enjoying each other's company. As soon as the fish and venison, with rice, was ready, we sat down across from each other eating the food and drinking wine. I kept catching her looking at me with a twinkle in her eyes as she sipped the wine. We nearly finished the whole bottle by the time we finished the food. I had brought my smart pad that had been charging all afternoon at the truck and we sat down to play some games on it that had been downloaded before, but not available anymore on what little Internet there was left.

"Have you contacted anybody using that?" She asked.

"Not since two years ago. That's when all email seemed to stop along with phone numbers no longer reaching anyone--'circuit not available.' This is a really smart device, but it needs connection to the Internet and someone on the other end to work like it should. All we can do now is work with any applications I already have installed. And that's not much."

Lisa changed the subject. "Do you want to go up on the roof? I have to check on my garden and the birds."

"That sounds great. Let's go."

We climbed to the roof where the birds, once again, started landing on her, and when there wasn't room, came to me. Lisa watered her garden plants for the night and we watched the sunset, nursing the last of the wine. I even saw a couple of the pigeons trying to get a sip of it, probably thinking it was water.

We stayed out on the roof after the sun went down just listening to the night sounds as the nighthawks flew by closely so that you could hear their wings cutting the air and their calls. Bats came out from under all the building eves with their wings flapping to a different beat than the nighthawks. It was something we wouldn't be able to experience in a busy city with traffic and other street noise. This was the city sound of night now. So peaceful and refreshing.

Soon, the stars appeared one by one, until the Milky Way was prominent across the sky and the moon rose over the mountains to the east. That was one thing this new world seemed to provide. Spectacular views of the night sky when there wasn't any light pollution. Our spot on top of a three floor building made it even clearer.

Finally, as we shared the view, she said. "Why don't you stay the night with me. You can use dad's bed. I'll put clean sheets on it. I know it's going to be hotter than you're used to, but I will open the windows and turn on the fans. I just want you to stay with me now that you're here. I'd feel a lot better… safer." Even in the dark, I could see her pleading eyes.

I felt the same way. "Okay. I know how you feel. I'm used to being alone and I don't mind it. But now that I've found you, I think we should start doing things together. At least until we get your extra gardens growing and make sure that you have plenty of food for next winter. I keep thinking that now, with you here, I don't have anywhere else to go."

"Really? You've got that big truck. You can go anywhere."

"Like I said, I need to take care of you first. I'm tired (Actually a bit woozy from all the wine). We've got a big day tomorrow. Let's go to bed and get some rest."

Once downstairs, we opened the windows on the street side and alley side of the second floor and opened windows, as well, on the third floor so the heat of the day would rise to that floor and go out the windows. At least that was our plan. We found two big fans and set them up to bring cooler air in from outside on the alley side and then, blow it out the street side, the direction the evening breeze was flowing anyway down off the mountain behind the building.

Lisa put clean sheets on her dad's, and formerly, her grandparents' bed for me. We said our good nights, and I stripped to my shorts, promising that I would find a hot bath in the morning and slipped in under the cover of a sheet. I left the door open to the room to allow some of that fanned air to hopefully, cool off the room. Within about 15 minutes I was uncomfortably hot and sweating, so I threw off the sheet and stripped off the shorts because they were getting pretty rank anyway. Promise myself to get some clean ones of those I’d already washed downstairs and left in the dryer. Lying back down, I had second thoughts about sleeping in a bed where, perhaps three or four people had died. It kept me awake, thinking about it.

Not too long after, in the dim back light from a single bulb outside the door, I saw Lisa standing there. Just looking in at me. She was wearing a very thin shift that was nearly transparent. The backlighting provided a view of her body lines and made her hair look like it had a halo. With my eyelids half closed, she looked at me as though I was asleep. At first hesitating, she finally came to me, and sat gently on the bed so as not to wake me, and reached over, putting her hand around my penis. Involuntarily, I grew in her hand.

My thoughts were mixed. I couldn't believe she was doing this. Gently, she pulled the foreskin back, and then forward again. I said, "What are you doing?"

"Don't you like to masturbate? I do. And I even use those sex toys I found in the unclaimed laundry sometimes." She started to move my foreskin more rapidly back and forth as I grew in her hand with a feeling of fullness that I hadn't felt in a long time.

"You're too young to masturbate. Whatever put that idea in your head?"

"I'm not." She sounded a bit annoyed. "I started bleeding three years ago. Before my dad died, I had to become a woman very fast. Besides, I found dad's store of triple X rated videos and watched every one. Some of those girls were younger than me. They all seemed to be having so much fun having sex. I wanted to have sex with you the first time I saw your strong muscles and beautiful green eyes!" She was whimpering, on the verge of begging. I was becoming too excited to complain.

Lisa took my wrist and lifted my left hand to her right breast. It felt soft and wonderful through that gauzy cloth. She bent down and started to use her tongue on me as she stroked. My excitement grew to the point of pent-up energy and I let loose sperm I thought I didn't have. She licked it all up like she needed the protein. Maybe she did. I couldn't believe what just happened.

Without saying another word she crawled onto the bed with me and cuddled up alongside pulling my left hand into her groin where I felt her warm wetness and placed her warm breasts against my arm and chest while she breathed in my ear and nibbled on it. I wiggled my fingers on my left hand a bit awkwardly as she opened to me as if wanting me to plunge my fingers into her softness. I just played around the edges for a while and then inched one finger in slowly as she moved her hips wanting more.

Her breathing became ragged and she rose on her arms and bent down to kiss me. There was wine on her breath, but that probably was on mine, too, as she started to kiss me with her tongue as she continued to thrust her hips into my hand. I lifted my right hand to her left breast and felt the beauty of her erect nipple, tickling it with my fingers and squeezing the small breast with my hand.

She moved over quickly and brought my, once again, bursting hard penis into her vagina with her right hand and slid down on it. With a few strong movements of her hips, I came again and she cried out letting me know that it was as wonderful for her as it was for me.

It was over so quickly that I didn't have time to say anything to her. She just collapsed off me and cuddled up close to me like before, staring me in the eyes in the very dim light. It wasn't long before we both drifted off into sleep.

I appreciate there are dialogues now in the story, but this is just not my style and idea of a science fiction story. So sorry, Ron! I'm having a hard time in accepting and labeling this story as a science fiction genre. I just don't know what it is. Perhaps we live in different eras, and I'm so used to watching Star Treks. This is not a science fiction story.

A couple of places need correction:

"Have you contacted anybody using that?" She asked? - I think the second "?" is supposed to be a period.

"You're too young to masturbate. Whatever put that idea in your head? - A close quotation mark is missing.

Some of Will Smith's science fiction movies don't make sense either, and people should not look up his movies for reference in how to write their science fiction stories.

For instance, in Independence Day, the ending was a joke. The aliens just happened to be using the same computer system...like Windows for example and our virus are even compatible with them to be able to be downloaded to them to destroy their entire system. In reality, on earth, the viruses made for Windows are not even compatible with a Mac computer. We cannot even download viruses that are made for Windows to a Mac machine. The ending of Independence Day is laughable. I bet you the aliens were just happened to be using the same kind of computer system like we had on earth so we could download the virus to them to destroy their system.

Yes, I look for mistakes like this in a movie.

Like in the movie The Day After Tomorrow, the streets of New York has never been so clean. There was no debris in the water. That was a mistake too.

The above is just MHO.

I'm hoping with the turn of events, the Wanderer and Lisa will now stay together. It would be symbolic of the visions you already implanted in the mind's eye of the reader where nature has the ability to rebound and replenish.
