This dream I had last night could be a message for someone else who requires guidance - someone who may be in a position of an organization that is merging with another large company - I will relay the message as it comes to me.

Last night, I had the most incredible dream. Once again, I dreamed of my Aries boss, whom I first worked under when I first joined this organization in Canada.

I dreamed, once again, that his department had merged with another large department and that we needed to find out what everyone in the other department was doing.

Actually - in real life - I was not this boss's assistant when I first worked for him, but I was well-versed in creating reports, charts, and slide show presentations with the Microsoft PowerPoint program.

During this period of my life, I burdened myself with a tremendous amount of duties that were not mine - duties that should have been of the boss's assistant - but placed on my shoulders. Nonetheless, his assistant was sitting around collecting her salary. The woman was already in her 60s and was not concerned about learning anything new for her job.

I was foolish enough to take on her duties at the rate of my measly salary. Idiotically, I was happy I would do what my boss would ask me to do for him because I thought he was playing favorite between his assistant and myself. Oh, well, what did I know when I was that age? I had always been a sucker for extra duties.

Oh, sorry, for distracting you! Now, let's get back to my dream:

In this dream, the employees in the merged department were very disorganized. These employees seemed very angry and were very immature. They did not seem to want to take orders from anyone. They were all out playing somewhere that looked like a children's playground. My boss sighed heavily, pointed to those employees and said to me, "Call those people in for a meeting."

I did what my boss had told me to do. I called out to those employees to come to the boardroom for a meeting. Several employees came in from the crowd but were very resentful and disrespectful. They talked amongst themselves and completely ignored me. I told them that it was my first time holding an official meeting and that I would like them to be more cooperative and keep themselves quiet so we could discuss the things that required discussion.

Two women in the crowd continued to talk and would not pay attention.

One of them looked like Kathy Bates, the actress who appeared in one of Stephen King's movies called "Misery." She continued her conversation with another woman next to her, talking over my voice. I was upset and pointed at her and shouted, "YOU!! OUT OF HERE!!!"

She was startled but got up and left anyway.

I asked the rest of the employees who the secretary was and that I would like to have an organizational chart sent to me. I also reminded them that I would need their job descriptions to determine what to give them for their new position within this merged department. They became disgruntled and moved about the room disrespectfully, making a lot of fuss. I told the staff that we would interview each employee to discuss their present occupation, including the percentage of the work they have been doing, compared to the job description. I told them we planned on phasing out some of the underperforming positions.

The staff was very angry with me, and suddenly, a thought came to my mind: Wait a minute! Wasn't this meeting supposed to be held by my boss? And not me? Why am I so foolish as to, once again, take on his responsibility and have everyone hate me?

I also took a moment of epiphany to re-evaluate my life. I quickly realized that I have always taken everyone else's action and bore the consequence when that consequence could have been theirs.

Then I thought perhaps the next time before any meeting takes place, we should discuss who would be holding the meeting. An email should be sent out to the employees in advance, advising them when, where, and who will be holding the meeting and what would be the topic for discussion.

At this moment, I walked out of the meeting because the people were angry at me.

What a dream I had! Is this dream a special message to someone else that needs guidance? I do not know. I often have visions or dreams that come to me but are unrelated to me. That is why I need to post this and send out its message.

Your story is a good example of what our dreams do: sort through short-term memory, reorganize it, and then put it in the long term memory where you may remember something that happened many years before with quite clarity. The uncertainty of today's corporate world and management organization is clear in your story. Freeloading is nothing new. It has always occurred in the family where one member of the family may do all the work and the rest freeload. It occurred in the tribe where there were well-organized and active people that did the heavy work and helped feed the tribe while many members just laid low and did very little. So the company is like a tribe where the primary thing holding it together is money in the form of salaries. Salaries are always in contention. A wise company would pay wisely its most productive employees.

This problem in your dream is in our everyday's life as companies closing down and larger companies buying them. Valuable employees are the ones who have been doing extra duties. I often see those CEO's sit on their asses and doing nothing but going on lengthy coffee breaks and extended lunch breaks while they assign their own work to others. You were right in your dream to phase out those employees who are underperforming. You were wise to do a little more extra duties at work to gain knowledge to make yourself a more valuable employee.

Your dream is inspirational. The more duties one takes on, even more is expected due to setting a precedence. I also know that one is between a rock and a hard place in the corporate world.

Hi Stephen:

I actually enjoyed working for that boss I have mentioned in my dream. He was a very smart boss, and he usually gave people a good impression of himself and what he could do. I liked him and had stayed with the department for 8 long years before I ventured out to seek positions in other departments. I was very loyal to him. I liked him even to this date. That is why he comes into my dreams very often.

Wow....Under the circumstances you did as well as you could possibly do considering the situation that you thrown into by your boss....Hmm....He sounds similar to a boss I had during the 2000's decade who threw all of his problems he didn't want to handle to his assistant manager....I had a series of dreams in the late 80's to early 90's about corporate office departmentalization / organization....I will have to give it a try....Might make for a good story....
