With all the watering holes that have been noted in Smiley Anders Advocate column - especially in my hometown of da Crescent City / 'Yatsville (New Orleans), I couldn't help but recall a hot spot in da "yat suburbs that my buddies and I used to check out great adult libations in "Fat City" during da disco craze: Fletcher's Nitery!
Later, my girlfriend - and eventual spouse, Maria, and I used to like dance and "Shake Shake Shake" to K. C. and Da Sunshine Band at "4141" under the Disco Mirror Shining Ball on St. Charles Ave!
Since I was and still am a lousy dancer, as my Lady M can still attest, this was the definition of disco dancing for me: "dis foot goes here, and dat foot goes dere!"
That certainly is a humorous take on how you dance. You sure look handsome and Maria beautiful in that picture during your dancing days. As late as 1998-1990, I was going with my girlfriend, a professional dancer, to clubs here in Houston, where, while I was beginning to trip over my left foot and ankle that wouldn't respond, Jeanie would hold me up and keep me dancing. Sometimes the crowd would give us the highest honor… Clapping. I was fortunate to learn professional dancing in high school on Fridays during lunch coed dancing with an Arthur Murray instructor volunteered to teach us. Later I joined the crowd doing the twist during our freshman year in college and then all the dances after that. My wife and I met at our twentieth reunion from high school dancing to Beatles hits. Somehow I missed the disco craze.
