An inspiring life revealing "dressy tale" from my Social Worker Colleague, Pamela Pioth, LCSW, that can bring a little levity so needed by all of us who are dealing with the very serious concerns related to COVID-19. Prayers for all who have died - their families and friends - from this tragedy and those still recovering, as well as those whom have completed their course with the disease.

Here is the story of my beginning. I was just a pretty bag dress hanging in the store looking good and funky. My body was a material of soft white cotton laced with red configurations. And, at that time in the eighties my tag revealed my value at $125. I was a dress that fell to the ankles with long sleeves and I fit many sizes, mainly small to medium. I was made of a material that could fit a small figure and also expand and still look quite nice.
So, my life must have begun when I was shipped to this quaint little dress shop high in the mountains of Colorado. And then was taken out of the box and placed on a hanger to be sold. Little did I know that a lady customer was coming to purchase me and I would be with her for over forty years. And this does not mean that I was left in the closet and forgotten. The lady came into the store and saw me. She then decided for the money she would probably get a lot of wear out of me. She was also enamored with me. She got excited about seeing this bag dress.
Yes, I was comfortable to wear and maybe even promoted sassiness at times depending on the mood of the owner and where the owner was going that day or night. Indeed, over our years together, I have been to parties, on dates, often on the sofa with my lady drinking a beer or simply going to the store. I met many of her friends. I went everywhere with her. She loved me so much or rather she loved how I looked on her small frame of size four. Sometimes she added earrings to change my look. She loved how I made her feel really special. She said we looked cool together.
I have to say I am proud that I brought the lady so much joy. As I have been aware that she has acted very pleased with herself whenever she put me on. Our connection went on for many blissful years. I would say that we ripened as we went through our lives together.
Somebody said that things never remain the same. So, my owner gradually became older, as I watched her body size four change through the years to pudgy or rather larger. Then my world became drastically different because of this.
So I must say that I never imagined that I would turn out to be in this present situation. Well, here is the rest of my journey. She wore me all those years until I had a small tear, which later became a hole and then she mended me. Then many additional holes began appearing on me due to our experiencing those many life events. And then she decided to place me over her pajamas and use me as a robe and still she felt rather spiffy. She even went to the grocery with me and everyone seemed to respond like I was the bag dress that I was. We were still proud. As the weight and age came upon her over time, I stretched out with her and looked just fine.
But then came a time in the past weeks when she had this idea to cut me up into multiple pieces - as she was aware that I was becoming more of a hole instead of a dress. And I saw her smile as she was cutting me up. I think this was because it pleased her that she had been wearing me for so long. I did bring her joy. So she kept cutting. After the cutting there were approximately 60 or more pieces of me. Then she put me in an orderly pile, a respectful pile.
And to complicate life more, there is a virus that just arrived. And the “Corona” is currently spreading in the world and is becoming very dangerous. Nobody wants to go out as they are afraid that they might get the virus by being around others. Especially old people with poor immune systems need to stay home. So my lady does not choose to go to a store or be around people even though she needs to purchase some necessary items. She needs toilet paper at this time in a serious way. And she was informed that when people take a chance and go to the grocery, the toilet paper is usually all sold out. And the lady is now almost out of this paper so she must come up with a plan.
So I am going to leave you now to think about what she is planning to do with me or the many pieces of me. That’s right, I am her red and white lovely bag dress, who has had many glorious days of wear on her, have gotten old with her, and now I have literally become her rags. Also, remember now, she is very low on her toilet paper at this time. The lady needs toilet paper. So I am catching on here that I may possibly be used shortly in a much more personal manner. And, also see if you can deal with this fact, that I am a washable fabric that can be used again and again. So it is possible that I may be with her for an additional stretch of time and be of the utmost value. What do you think - I believe this to be an honorable journey for being a bag dress.
