This is about a family in Texas whose last name is Pearson. They are in the process of adding to their ever-growing family; in just a few months, two Cambodian sisters will join them. (The two girls are now staying with a family in Tennessee until their prospective family gets the needed adoption paperwork completed.)
My name is Milton Pearson, and I am married to a wonderful woman named Phoebe. We have three biological children (Brandt, who is 15, Sapphire Ronee, who is 14, and Ashford, who is our youngest at 13), and we also have 6 adopted children, all with special needs. Our adopted children are, in part: Malik Curtis and Miracle Faith (they are twins, and they are 11); Jamar Kingston (10); Jordan Kyung (9); Henry Long (8); and our newest addition, Hayleigh Ngoc Michelle, who is just 6 years old.
We live in a nice neighborhood in the city of Fort Worth, Texas.
I am a high school math teacher and a coach for the local high school basketball team; and my wife is a homemaker and stays home to take care of our children.
As I said, most of our children have special needs, especially the ones who are adopted. One of our own children is disabled, as well; Ashford, our youngest natural-born child, has epilepsy. (The other two natural born ones are not disabled; they are both healthy.) Hayleigh, our youngest (and newest) child, has spina bifida and right now can't walk (but she desperately wants to learn to walk with crutches or braces someday). She mainly gets around by wheelchair, or someone has to carry her from place to place. Our youngest boy, Henry, is blind, and Jordan, our 9-year-old, is profoundly deaf and communicates with sign language. Jamar has severe asthma and has often ended up in the hospital, and the twins, Miracle and Malik, both have cerebral palsy (plus Miracle is also profoundly mentally handicapped).
We are in the process of adding to our family in a few months. We will be getting two little girls (both sisters, ages 13 and 4 1/2) who were born in Cambodia. The two little girls are both special-needs children as well: Hanh Ly is visually impaired (but is otherwise healthy), and her little sister, Linn Chan, was born without arms but is otherwise healthy. Right now Hanh Ly and Linn Chan are staying with a family in Tennessee until we get our paperwork completed; and in the spring (like around March or April; somewhere in that time frame), they will join us here in Texas, and they will be assimilated into our family. We are looking forward to that day, and we have already talked to both of the girls on the phone. We have also talked to the girls' caregivers; and they seem to be adjusting to family life and their new home in America. They are learning English, and they are getting used to being around other children.
From the sound of things, it seems that both Linn and Hanh are adjusting beautifully; and nothing pleases more than to hear that. We are certainly looking forward to that wonderful day when they will become members of our family; what a wonderful occasion THAT will be!
