This running story is a place for me to escape to and be the other me...

It’s not very big and I bought it on a whim,

Several garvy flats & a couple of boarders,

We rent out the garvies for local fishing trips,

We have a small bait store, minnows mostly,

Some food stuffs too, nothing too costly.

The locals are rather haughty & ignore me,

But I love my little business, it keeps me free,

Free to be me and drink cheap rum, always I got a buzz,

I live on property, a small apartment over the store,

I am visited by “Blu” on rare occasions when she can spare time,

Or I wander over to her place, the Café Le Blu, to relax,

On those stressful days that the tourists give too much crap.

The property we keep as clean as possible, not much to clean,

We store some boats, nothing bigger than thirty feet,

And with our lift we can put boats into or take them out of water,

At our leisure, no matter the time of day, but we request daytime.

The most use we get is when a storm is brewing,

The tourists all run north towards the mainland,

So we have our little berg to ourselves for the time being,

The storms are thus our refuge; they may hit us hard,

But otherwise they give us the break from the world we need.

An interesting dream carried out in a story. But I do find it a bit strange that while the business relies on tourists and you seem to be there in your dream to escape the mainland, you are defeating your purpose by catering to tourists. You say so when you say that dangerous storms are preferred over making a livelihood with people. Because they are obnoxious? Or because you don't like people? Every business has to deal with obnoxious people. That is just part of being in business. They call it, customer service.

Not sure that a life of being "buzzed" is particularly a good life. Can't one get high on just the mostly beautiful weather, the ever-changing sea, the boats needing care and going in and out of the docks, and the joy in tourists' faces when they made a great catch on the water?

It is strange but most of the drunks that I've known seem to be obsessed with cleanliness. Except when they get too drunk to do anything anymore.

Lovely summer story. Enjoyed very much, Ed, for its quality and its casual mood. Nicely done.
