Tom met Jerry in Kindergarten. They were best friends. Tom did not care that Jerry was a girl. In fact, she was better at baseball, football, and basketball the most of the boys. They shared everything; they even wrestled and fought like boys.
Tom’s dad left his mom just after he was born. Mom joined the army and was a captain. Jerry’s mom passed away when she was two and her dad was a major.
Jerry’s dad was transferred to a different base and two months later, Tom’s mom who works for Jerry’s dad was also transferred. Other than those two months, Jerry and Tom were always together. They had fun, got into trouble, and they shared secrets as boys.
Seven summers ago, Jerry transformed into Gerie. It happened very suddenly. It was the beginning of August and they had the usual summer. Their little league team won the championship. Jerry hit 326 and Tom hit 322 for the season. He had four homeruns to Jerry’s one homerun. They had a BB gun but lost that they the parents found out they kill a rabbit with it. Neither of them sat down that night.
Jerry came to Tom one fateful day and asked if things would change if she was a girl. “You are a girl?” he questioned.
She meant if she started acting a girl. He was not sure how they got on the subject, but before it was done, she asked Tom if he would want to have sex, if he knew he was dying. The conversation just dried up after that.
It was early the next day when Jerry apologized for bringing up that subject. Tom guessed Jerry knew it freaked him out. The whole thing about sex and dying was a little creepy.
Jerry asked Tom again if things would change if she was a girl. This time he knew something was bothering her.
He asked, “Why?”
She said there was something he just had to see. Now, Jerry acted and looked like any other boy. She looked around to make sure they were alone, then, unbutton her shirt.
There was a tube top her dad made her wear when she was 7 while in the pool. While the other boys went topless, she was stuck with that tube top. Now she was 13, it was strained and stretched.
Tom started to inquire about the tube top and Jerry told him to keep quiet. The next thing he knew, she lifted the circular top. Out popped two “girl boobies” and they were staring Tom in the face.
He stuck out his finger to feel them and felt the same in trepidation as he did when they were poking at the dead bunny. It was surreal moment that will stay in his memory forever. As gently as he good, as if they would shatter into a million pieces, he touched one of them. Jerry said “go ahead and poke them, it won’t hurt.”
Tom mentioned how weird it was to see them. Jerry’s enlightenment to Tom was “you think looking at them is weird, try having them on your chest.” Tom asked about the tube top and Jerry confirmed that does start hurting after wearing it all day. “That is why you been going home early every night?” he added.
Jerry explained, “I like playing with you, like baseball and things like that, but lately, I want to look pretty. Do girl things.” He must have had a strange look on his face because she added, “I am a girl yaknow.”
She told Tom that her father has been asking her about wanting to wear dresses and stuff, he wasn’t pushing Jerry, but he did ask. Jerry showed Tom a credit card her father gave her, just in case she would like some dresses for the eighth grade.
That night he obtained permission from mom to go to the mall with Jerry to buy a new mitt for “her.” Mom asked “for her?” And he said “she is a girl.” Tom thought that was the first time she heard Tom admitted Jerry was a girl.
The first bus for the mall came at 9:00 in the morning. It was a 50-minute trip to the mall. It would travel around the mall. At the top of the hour, it would start back.
They departed at the first stop in the mall. It was where they always got off the bus, right next to the sports store. They passed through that store and went into the mall. Tom never went into the mall without his mom dragging him. They had no idea where they were going.
They were looking for girl clothes. The first store they stopped at had girl clothes but they looked like something his mom would wear. They came to a big department store, and they wondered in to there. As luck would have it, there was a large sign that read “Junior Misses” with an arrow pointing the way.
They figured the first thing to buy was a bra to wear instead of that old tube top. They stopped by the bra table and he picked one up. It was huge and he leaned over and whispered this is much too big and they both started laughing aloud.
Then Gloria, the salesperson in charge of that department, yelled, “You boys get away from there.” Tom full of pride for his best friend replied, “She ain’t a boy, she’s a girl.” Gloria who was now inquisitive as to their trek asked, “What are you wearing now. Jerry still trying to get the boy out of her opened up her shirt and showed the tube top she had been wearing.
Gloria asked how big Jerry was and Jerry tried to show her. Gloria suggested they go to the fitting room instead of the middle of the store.
When they reached the dressing rooms, Gloria instructed Tom to stay out. “Why’ he exclaimed “I seen them before.”
Gloria pointed out there are other women who would not be as open for Tom seeing them getting dressed.
They were in the dressing rooms for a few minutes and then Jerry and Tom followed Gloria to the bra table and picked out several bras for Jerry. Tom in his stupidity asked, “Why does she need so many.” Gloria asked if he wears the same underwear every day. “No, mom will not let me,” was his reply.
Gloria checked with her manager and then took them over to the dresses. They picked out about five dresses, some skirts and shirts (blouses as Gloria explained). Tom mentioned what happens if you do not like wearing these clothes. They scaled back to two dresses, a skirt and a blouse.
It was lunchtime and they stopped by the food court. After lunch, they saw the video arcade and went in there. Tom guarded her clothes as if there were diamonds. In his distraction, Gerry beat him every game.
It was about 2:00 and they passed the store where Gloria worked and she was coming out. She was done for the day. She asked if they were still interested in making over Jerry. They thought they had everything.
Gloria smiled that grown up I know more than you smile and said, “Let me show you.” Gloria knowing they were a team took them to a beauty solon. The hairdresser knew Gloria by name. Now Jerry had the same haircut Tom had. He thought she looked good. The hairdresser said she would make a girl out of Jerry.
Tom wondered the mall until 3:30. He knew had had to take the 4:00 bus in order to get home by five as instructed. He walked to the solon and asked if Jerry was ready. The pretty girl standing next to Tom said yes. “Where is she?” he queried. Right here the pretty girl replied. Jerry had her hair, face and nails done. She even got pierced ears with a gold studs sticking out.
Tom could do nothing but stand there with his mouth open. Jerry told him to “shut up.” They ran to the other end of the mall to catch the bus. They just missed it, so they ran back to the other end right next to the solon. Again, they missed it.
It was almost six when they arrived at the base. It was after six before they finally arrived home. Tom’s mother was at Jerry’s house when they arrived. Tom went in first. Both parents were quite angry. “Where’s Jerry,” they demanded. Tom stuck his hand out the door and waved her in.
The two adolescents must have done well that day because both parents broke out in smiles when they saw her. Coming home late was at least a week of grounding. Grounding for them was not being able to see each other. One or both of them would be sent away to visit relatives.
The next day, Jerry came out wearing a dress. Tom picked out this one. She had boobies and he pointed it out to her. If it was anyone else, she would have been embarrassed. With Tom, she simply asked, “What do you think?” Sometimes, Tom believe his endorsement was more important than her dad’s was.
They sat and talked. Tom pointed out she would have to change the spelling of her name. Instead of JERRY, it should be GERRI. After an hour of playing with the letters, she decided on GERIE. She just liked the way it flowed. She claimed that even in the dress she could out hit Tom.
That was 7 summers ago and Gerie has been in jeans and a t-shirt as much as she has been in dresses. They are both in college now. Tom has semesters and she has quarters. He finishes three weeks before her finals. Before coming home, he visits to see Gerie at her dorm. Her roommate is heading home that weekend which left an empty bed.
Katie, the roommate, hints at them being romantically involved and Gerie says “ewe” in a feminine way that only girls can do. It was not that bad Tom protests and Gerie reminds Tom of their one and only date.
Both parents had a rule there is no dating until they were sixteen. Tom’s birthday was July 5. It was probably that night they decided to try dating. The next day he asked her father if he could date his daughter. He said if he could date his daughter, he was allowed to. “But no looking or poking at her breast.” He added. Between the two of them, they scrapped together enough money to go on a date if they watched what they ate, and received the student discount at the movies.
The night of their date, Gerie was in her best dress, his favorite. Tom wore his best pants and shirt and even put on the tie his mother gave him for Christmas, which he only had to wear twice a year, Christmas and Easter. Gerie, born three month earlier than he, had to do the driving since she already has a license.
Only the early showings had the student discount and they finished their date at nine. It was great being out with his best friend but it did not feel like a date. They arrived home and at the door he tried to kiss her. This was the only romantic kiss they ever shared. They both turned their heads the same direction and bumped noses. When they finely did kiss, it felt weird. It was nothing either expected the first kiss to be. They have been just friends ever since.
Neither has romantic feeling for the other. They both feel very comfortable with each other. Tom has other girlfriends and Gerie tells Tom about boys she has dated. The feeling they have around other dates is anything but comfortable. Kissing is a whole lot more interesting with other people.
That night he realizes how good of friends they are. Gerie’s friend and Gerie’s boyfriend joined them, which made a foursome. The two arrive back to her dorm about one in the morning after a night on the town.
Gerie preparing for bed right in front of Tom. Seeing a girl take off a bra in front of Tom should be exciting. Gerie kidded Tom about seeing her “girl boobies,” but all he could see was Jerry, with snot running down the nose running the bags with Tom. They reminisced across the room until they both fell asleep.
